Annual Kwanzaa Celebration to be Held at CLU

CLU invites members of the community to join in the celebration of Kwanzaa, an African–American holiday honoring family, community and culture, on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Preus–Brandt Forum.

The traditional Kwanzaa, started in the 1960s by an African–American professor, was created to reinforce the principles, practices and symbols which are geared to the spiritual and social needs of African–Americans. The holiday, which is observed for seven days from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1, celebrates the first fruits of the season and emphasizes the concepts of togetherness and unity. The family celebration is now observed by cultures around the world.

CLU's one–day Kwanzaa celebration will include dancers, gospel music, vendors with arts and crafts, and authentic African food. The event is sponsored by CLU Multicultural and International Programs, the CLU Black Student Union, the Afro–Centric Committee of Ventura County and the NAACP Saturday School. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.
