"About Teachers and Students"

Anonymous

I have attended many schools, public and private, and taught in many universities, both large and small. Among all of these, California University stands out because it is the most genuine in its love of learning and support of students. It has the warmth of a family and a concern for the well being of every member. It is open to ideas and tolerant of differences that would be barriers in other parts of our society. This rich environment makes possible what could not happen elsewhere.

For an example, take Joe Shivley- a mature student who was black, curious, but initially slow to learn. He knew what he did not know and came more than once or assistance when I encouraged it. My expectations for Joe were to raise him to an average student.
How wrong I was.

His project at the end of the semester was exceptional. He finished all assignments with top grades. He was grateful for the extra time and became my top performer. Of course, he was always a top performer- but I had yet to discover that.

Last week I saw him graduate with his MBA. The truth is that every student can be Joe Shivley- if we pay attention to their needs, interests and capabilities.
