Silva Karayan, Ph.D.
Professor of Education. Director, Special Education Programs. Director, Center for Academic Service-Learning for Research & Development.
Dr. Karayan is Professor of Education and Director of the Special Education Program at CLU. The Program offers Mild to Moderate and Moderate to Severe Disabilities Credentials, both Level I and Level II, and a Master of Science in Special Education.
In addition to her academic and administrative responsibilities, Dr. Karayan plays an active role in the recruitment, preparation, and support of special education teacher candidates, by creating partnerships with the county Offices of Education, school districts and local professional organizations.
Professor Karayan’s scholarly activities include frequent presentations at national and international conferences. Her scholarly work and research are published in peer-reviewed professional journals. She is the author of “Faculty Guide to Academic Service-Learning Pedagogy,” a rich resource for university faculty interested in Service-Learning pedagogy. Also, she serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal for National Association for Alternative Certification (NAAC).
Dr. Karayan has spearheaded a number of successful initiatives at CLU. She is the founding Director of CLU’s Center for Academic Service-Learning for Research and Development. She was the first Chair of CLU’s Center for Teaching and Learning for Faculty Development which created the President’s Award for Teaching Excellence. She became the director of CLU’s Service-Learning Partnerships in Inclusive Education Project, a collaborative initiative between CLU and several school districts. This project was made possible through a CEC grant.
