Major in Theatre Arts
Some CLU theatre arts graduates make their way onto stage and screen; others attend graduate school; and others use the performance, work, communication and management skills they develop for work in a variety of fields, including teaching, sales, personnel, and the ministry.
A life on stage, film, television, new media or in the wings. Performing or teaching others to perform. Using performance to build community and transmit values. These are the career and life goals of theatre arts majors at Cal Lutheran.
A degree in theatre arts prepares students for performances and technical productions in live theatre, film, television and multimedia. The theatre arts department offers a series of fundamental and advanced courses in theatre along with numerous performance opportunities in our highly regarded Mainstage, Blackbox and film and video productions. Students participate in a yearly average of four major productions, including musicals, original films, improvisational theatre and the Blackbox series.
Not only do CLU students shine onstage-they're also busy behind the scenes, taking positions of responsibility with publicity, sound, light, makeup, scene and costume design. And opportunities continue through the summer with student internship opportunities in Camp Shakespeare and the Kingsmen Shakespeare Festival, a professional theatre company that performs on campus.
Before graduation, every theatre arts major has the opportunity to direct or design a play production-an opportunity which has led to top awards for Cal Lutheran students at the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival. Students also are encouraged to take professional theatre internships at local arts centers, including the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza-and to pursue the many stage, screen, and musical industry opportunities that residents of the world's entertainment capital enjoy.
Visual and Performing Arts scholarships are available to those students with a high school 3.0 grade point average whose talent, interest, or experience indicates they would contribute to the CLU theatre arts program. Awards are made to talented students whether they are theatre arts majors or non-theatre arts majors.
