Minor in Psychology
If understanding human thought and behavior is at the heart of a liberal arts education, the study of psychology is at the heart of that process. For those interested in the study of human thought, emotion, and behavior, a psychology major is ideal.
Psychology students learn first about the empirical foundation of psychology. Then, through exposure to the many exciting areas encompassed in the field, students apply theory and concepts to real world problems, cases and issues-developing their analytical, communication and critical thinking skills in the process.
Cal Lutheran's psychology faculty encourages students to become actively engaged in the learning process. The major's three junior/senior Capstone courses-clinical practicum, applied psychology, and research practicum-involve students directly in the mental health field as they integrate and apply theory and concepts, and address ethical and practical concerns.
Qualified students may join the CLU chapter of Psi Chi, the national honor society for psychology majors. Each year, several CLU students receive support to present the findings of their research projects at the California Psychological Association conference and the Santa Clara Conference for Undergraduate Research. Many students participate in internships at such mental health facilities as Las Posadas, Tri- Counties Regional Center, Valley Trauma Center, Casa Pacifica; and the Ventura County District Attorney's Victims Advocate Office, and Probation Department.
Students targeting work in community service centers, clinics and business usually pursue the bachelor of arts degree in psychology; those considering careers in the clinical and research arena typically seek the bachelor of science in psychology degree.
