International Students

Registration Process

When do classes begin?

The first day of classes for undergraduate and graduate students is Wednesday, August 29, 2007.

Is there anything I can do to prepare myself for registration?

Yes. Please refer to your Admitted Student Handbook for details about registering for classes.

It is important to familiarize yourself with specific academic requirements for your course of study at Cal Lutheran. A bulletin or program brochure with detailed information concerning course requirements will be given to you at orientation. We will hold a session prior to registration which will help explain the requirements. Also, you will be meeting with a faculty advisor during the registration session who will assist you in selecting your courses for the semester.

Although the University has some specific requirements that you must meet to graduate, you will have some freedom to choose your courses. You will find that course requirements at Cal Lutheran are divided into three parts: general education courses (what we call the "Core"); courses in your "major" (one subject area in which you would like to gain expertise); and "electives" (courses which are of interest to you).

In the first two years of a four-year degree, students generally concentrate on fulfilling requirements in the Core, while the last two years are used for study in the major. Elective courses can be taken any time. Each student is required to complete 124 credits to graduate. Each class counts for 3 or 4 credits, and students usually take between 14 and 16 credits per semester. NOTE: Full-time enrollment, or a minimum of 12 credits, is required for all international students.

Each course is assigned a number. Classes numbered in the 100 and 200 range are lower division courses (taken in the first and second years) while classes numbered in the 300 and 400 range are upper division courses. Of the 124 credits needed for graduation, at least 40 must be in upper division courses.

Students who expect to receive university credit from their previous school must have their official university grade reports and test scores evaluated in order to determine their academic equivalency to the U.S. educational system and credit toward a degree at Cal Lutheran. You should communicate with the Coordinator of International Admission at Cal Lutheran for this evaluation, which is necessary for class registration.
