While the famed beaches of Malibu are just minutes away, CLU's location lends itself to more than just fun on the sand. Students with an eye toward marine biology unlock the secrets of the deep in classes like Professor Andrea Huvard's marine biology and oceanography courses. Students might find themselves examining animal life at Oxnard Pier, or doing an environmental study of Newport Bay. Other field studies venture farther out to the Channel Islands National Park, just off the coast near CLU, where a distinctive island chain (California's own Galapagos) teems with biodiversity and kelp forests — and yearly trips to the waters off Hawaii and Mexico's Sea of Cortez attract scores of marine-minded students as well. As Huvard explains, "We have amazing access because of where we are. In Southern California we live on the ocean."
