About Telios

California Lutheran University Student Life is pleased to announce that plans are underway for the 2009 Telios program, our Outdoor Orientation and Leadership program designed for incoming freshmen students. We are excited about you participating in the program and learning about what it takes to be a leader on our campus.

The goal of Telios is to bring incoming freshmen together and have an experience learning about themselves in the wilderness of Yosemite National Park. We chose this format because we believe in the connection between challenging oneself physically and progressing oneself holistically and we want to assist in developing students at our university.

Telios will take place one week prior to the 2009 New Student Orientation. Participants move into CLU housing on Friday, August 21, and then on Saturday we leave the comforts of Thousand Oaks and head north to Yosemite National Park for a week of hiking, rock climbing, and other adventures.

Scaling heights both literal and figurative, 17 incoming freshmen took part in the first CLU freshman leadership training retreat known as Telios — from the Greek word for "completeness" in terms of reaching a destination — which took place at Yosemite National Park in August.

These newest members of the CLU community challenged themselves physically while making new friends prior to the start of classes. The program was designed by CLU administrators, including Clark Cripps, Coordinator for Intramurals, Fitness, and Recreation who recounts, "We camped and hiked Half Dome, and it was an eye-opener to see how people's strengths came out. Students got a chance to bond with 16 other freshmen, something that helped their transition to school."
