Application Instructions
The Presidential Scholarship Application must be completed in one sitting. We recommend you read and print out the Application Explanation below to help you gather and prepare the necessary information.
Application Explanation
Section 1 – Biographical Information
This section will ask for name, birthday, parent contact information, closest airport etc.
Section 2 – Activities Resume
List and describe your most significant high school activities, leadership positions, community and public service, and any honors, awards, and/or employment experience.
Layout of Section 2
There are 5 categories and 5 boxes for you to list your extracurricular involvements and accomplishments. The categories are: Arts, Athletics, Church and Community, Employment, General (Clubs, Student Organizations, Honors, etc.).
The following is an example Activities Resume:
ARTS:
Freshman Choir 9, Varsity Choir 10-12, Choir President 11-12, All State Honors Choir 11-12, Most Improved Choir Member 10
Marching Band 9-12, Drum Major 11-12, Wind Ensemble 9-12, Saxophone Section Leader 11-12, All State Band 11-12.
ATHLETICS:
Football 9-12, Varsity 10-12, MVP 10, Captain 11-12, CIF Champions 11-12
Track 9-10, Varsity 10, 100M, 200M, 4x100M Relay, 4x200M Relay, CIF Champion 10
CHURCH AND COMMUNITY:
Youth Group 9-12, Youth Group Leader 12, Various mission trips 9-12
Safety Saturday Volunteer 9-12; Safety Saturday is a community event put on by the local hospital to educate kids and families on safety. My roles included helping with check-in, answering questions, and helping attendees find exhibits.
Girl Scout 9-12, Silver Award 11, Gold Award 12: For my Gold Award project I developed a volunteer reading program for kids at my local library.
EMPLOYMENT:
Lifeguard 11-12, Most Valuable Staff Member 12
GENERAL (Clubs, Student Organizations, Honors, etc.):
Honor Roll 9-12
Principals Award 12: awarded to students who maintain a 3.75 GPA or higher
National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine 11
National Honor Society 11-12
This activities resume is your opportunity to tell the scholarship committee about all of your involvements in high school and any and all honors you have received. If there is an item that you feel needs explanation (i.e. something that is unique to your school or community) please feel free to include a brief description (see the Church and Community example above). This is your opportunity to brag.
Section 3 – Essay
Please write an essay on one of the following three topics. Average essay length is 600-1000 words.
ESSAY TOPICS WILL BE AVAILABLE ON OR BEFORE NOVEMBER 15, 2008.
Layout of Section 3
At the top of the box, it will ask you to select your essay topic and you click the radial next to the topic of your choice. You then type (or cut and paste) your essay into the box.
Section 4 – Travel Information and Participation Agreement
You will read statements regarding the Presidential Scholarship Program and our cancellation policy. Most of this information is available on the Participation Information page. You and your parent/guardian then sign and date the bottom of the application. No preparations are needed for this section.
