The Presidential Scholarships

Important Participant Information

Before submitting your Presidential Scholarship Application, we ask that you and your family read and understand the following:

Attendance

You are able to attend in person the full event from Thursday, March 19, through Saturday, March 21, 2009. All finalists will be traveling on Thursday, March 19, to campus. Students coming from anywhere outside the continental United States may come to campus on Wednesday, March 18, 2009, to avoid a late arrival and provide an opportunity for the student to adapt to the time change. The program concludes on Saturday, March 21. Cal Lutheran will provide a letter to your high school explaining your absence on Thursday and Friday. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE TO THE EVENT SCHEDULE.

Transportation

Transportation costs will be split between the University and the finalist. In the case of flights or trains, Cal Lutheran will purchase the most economical ticket that fits within the time constraints of the program. You will be asked for a credit card at the time of finalist notification for us to charge you for your half of the ticket. For those who are driving, Cal Lutheran will reimburse you one-way mileage from your home to Cal Lutheran at the rate of of $0.40 per mile if the amount is over $10.00. Should you decide to enroll at Cal Lutheran and pay your $300 enrollment deposit prior to May 1, 2009, we will credit your half of your travel to your student account. There are limited travel scholarships available. Please contact your Admission Counselor if you think you might qualify or for more information.

Cancellation Policy

Due to the magnitude of the program, Cal Lutheran has instituted a cancellation policy that is necessary to make this event successful for all those involved. At the time of finalist notification, you will be asked to supply credit card information. In the event you withdraw from the program after finalist notification, you will be charged a cancellation fee of $350. The cancellation fee will be used to fund the transportation of an alternate. If you cancel after travel arrangements have been made, you will be charged the full cost of your ticket in addition to the cancellation fee as the ticket will be in your name and is non-transferable or refundable.

Finalists versus Semi-Finalist Notification

The Presidential Scholarship Program is extremely competitive; typically we receive around 130 applications for 40 spots. The Presidential Scholarship Committee reads each application and selects the finalists to come to campus. Those students who are not selected as finalists are considered semi-finalists and still receive the academic scholarship they were awarded upon admission.

If a finalist should cancel in a timely manner, we will actively pursue an alternate to fill the open position until the spot is filled. Cal Lutheran is unable to reveal any scholar's rank or the probability of a spot becoming available. Should the opportunity arise for an alternate to attend the program, Cal Lutheran will cover the alternate's entire cost of travel to and from campus.
