Campus Diversity

In June 2003, The James Irvine Foundation awarded California Lutheran University a $400,000 grant as part of the foundation's Campus Diversity Initiative (CDI) to "help institutions to prepare all students for leadership in a diverse society and promote the success of underrepresented student populations." As part of the CDI, each institution is asked to establish a diversity plan with a detailed evaluation component.

This report offers a detailed outline of CLU's plan. Reflecting the University's commitment to diversity as a core value, it calls for an increase in diversity in three main areas:

  1. Within the student body, faculty and staff
  2. In the campus environment and community
  3. In the context of academic study

To assist in the design and implementation of this plan, CLU has established the President's Council on Diversity and Excellence. This council consists of members from across the university community:

  • Church Relations - Linda LeBlanc
  • Residence Life - Angela Naginey
  • Student Support Services - Damien Pena
  • Multicultural Affairs - Juanita Pryor-Hall
  • Admission - Darryl Calkins
  • Human Resources - Susan Tolle
  • Academic Affairs - Dr. Greg Freeland (Political Science)
  • Academic Affairs - Dr. Cynthia Jew (School of Education)

Along with the principal investigator, Dr. Michael Brint (Political Science), the council has one ex-officio member, Dr. Pamela Brubaker (Religion), who represents the WASC task force, and student member Felicia Alexander. To organize the council, CLU used part of the CDI grant to hire an Irvine Diversity Fellow, Dr. Jose Marichal, who is an expert on college campus diversity.

This report provides a detailed description of the following components:

  • CLU's main diversity objectives and outcomes
  • The specific goals required to reach those outcomes
  • Detailed strategies for achieving those goals
  • The baseline measures identifying where the institution currently stands
  • The proposed measures and targets to monitor effectiveness
