A member of the Mathematics Department since 2009, Dr. Carlson's field of expertise lies in set-theoretic topology. While he continues an active research program in topology, he has also gained a strong interest in mathematical ecology, especially models for the spread of invasive species. His teaching career began in the Peace Corps where he taught high school math in Botswana and now has a passion for mathematics teaching at all levels. While at CLU he has helped found the Thousand Oaks Teachers' Circle for middle and high school math educators. When not on campus he spends his time with his 3-year-old son Andrew, as well as hiking the Santa Monica Mountains, Wildwood Park, and many other places. His doctoral and master's degrees are from the University of Kansas and bachelor's degree from Oberlin College.
