They met by introducing themselves as neighbors in Mt Clef freshman year. After getting shot down by Casey from the start, Mike accepted that they would be "just friends." Both were student-athletes participating in Spring sports (Casey in Track and Field, Mike in Baseball) and both ended up getting on-campus jobs for the Athletics Department in the off-season. Charles and Michelle met at Cal Lutheran in 2006 when Michelle worked in the Career Center. Charles came in on the first day of school looking for an internship. After chatting in the office for about an hour they headed over to the Centrum for a quick lunch before class. After talking for about two hours straight he asked her out on a date! Read more...


Volleyball and Football Unite

Ryan '09 & Ashley (Benson '09) Cecil

Ryan Cecil and Ashley Benson met their freshmen year through Ryan's roommate. They had seen each other before while passing though the athletic training room because Ryan was a football player and Ashley was a volleyball player. But they were both shy people, so it took a while for them to start talking. But as the year went on they became friends, and even became best friends during their sophomore year. They hung out a lot. Ryan went to Ashley's volleyball games, she went to his football games, and just hung out together with their group of friends. Matt and Becky met at a JIF (Jesus Is Freedom) retreat in October of 2000. They were both attached to other people and content with just becoming friends (and "IM"ing quite a lot). A couple months later they both attended a Lord of Life retreat and there around a bonfire, both wearing thick gloves, held hands interlocking-fingers style during a prayer. For Matt it was apparently natural, for Becky it was a sign! By summer time they were disconnected to the people from home and forming a tight bond. Read more...

It was Spring 1963 when Warren and Judy met at Cal Lutheran.  Judy was working the salad line in the cafeteria and Warren had come to CLC in the Spring as a transfer student.  Liking salad, Warren spent a fair amount of time in that area of the cafeteria line.  The salads were “OK,” but the person behind the counter was special!  Read more...

On October 13, 2002 Gwen Guderjohn ('05) invited Lindsay's roommate Aubreigh Hutchison ('05) and her to attend a birthday party at Cho Cho San's Japanese restaurant in Thousand Oaks, CA. The roommates decided to help Gwen celebrate and so did a stranger...a very handsome baseball player who had transferred to CLU as a Junior. Paul and Elissa met in Senor Teichmann's Spanish Class in fall of 2000 when they sat next to each other. Elissa was a freshman and Paul was a sophomore. Elissa aced the first test but Paul did not so he asked her to study with him for the next one. On Halloween Elissa's roommates all went to Santa Barbara but she stayed in my room to spend time with Paul.. Paul asked her to be his girlfriend that night. Read more...

In the fall of 2003, every girl at CLU knew the Safety and Security officers, as they were the most handsome guys around.  The girls of Kramer Court used to call for escorts to the library or the other side of campus, even when they really did not need to go.  They called so often that one of the officers, Matt James, got to know one of the girls, Casey Jones, pretty well. The first time I set eyes on my wife was in Spanish class. I remember the instructor to be Professor Urioste, and Jayme sat directly in front of me. While we did not know each other, nor did we speak much during class, we did exchange knowing glances and pleasant hello's. What I do remember was her hair. Jayme had quite long, straight hair back in the mid-1990's, and since the class was at 8:00 in the morning, she didn't spend the time to blow dry it beforehand. Read more...

Wes and Katie were both residents of the “400 Club” (lower 4s) in Mt. Clef their freshman year. All of the residents on that floor were pretty good friends, but there wasn’t anything special between Wes and Katie at the time.  Sophomore year, Katie lived in Conejo Hall with three girls Wes knew in high school and so she got to know Wes a little better through them and took notice of his athletic abilities when he played volleyball outside of New West. One of her dorm neighbors was dating this guy (who she eventually married!) and they became friends through involvement in student government. Tom and Candace met while working in Newbury Park. Their mutual CLU friends that also worked with them thought they would be a good match. It was spring break of 2002 when they went on a casual date and started to get to know one another. Their friendship grew over the next year. Lindsay and Josh initially met in a gymnastics class offered at CLU in Spring of 2002. Lindsay thought it was sort of strange that Josh was in a gymnastics class, but if you know Josh, you wouldn't think anything of it. They were introduced by a mutual friend but nothing came of it at the time because they were both seeing other people at the time. The following year they spotted each other on a church snowboarding trip and Josh approached Lindsay and sparked a great conversation. Read more...

It was the 2nd or 3rd day of Freshman Orientation.  Carl was playing tennis with his new roommate, John Lenhardt (‘76).  They were evenly matched and the competitive juices were flowing. While the battle ensued, two lovely freshman girls (Susan Hofmann ’76 and Debbie Deeble’76) sat down to watch the action.  While changing sides in between games, John asked, “Would you like to play some mixed doubles?”  The reply was an enthusiastic “Yes!  We’ll be right back with our rackets!” Read more...

Jared '05 & Kristen (Mathre '05) Perry

In the early Fall of 2003, Kristen Mathre and Jared I. Perry were both Resident Assistants in neighboring Residence Halls. These two colleagues began a special friendship. Long walks through Wildwood Regional Park and hot chocolate at the Cross made these two inseparable. On January 11, 2005 during a trip to visit family and friends in Washington D.C., Jared asked Kristen to be his forever in the gardens of the Smithsonian Castle.
