Communities Breed Hate or Tolerance

How is Ventura County Doing?

Communities Breed Hate or Tolerance

Deborah Lauter, director of civil rights for the national Anti-Defamation League, will present “Communities Breed Hate or Tolerance: How is Ventura County Doing?” and answer questions from 6 to 7 p.m. in Richter Hall. A reception will precede the presentation at 5:30 p.m. in the Kwan Fong Gallery of Art and Culture.

Lauter will explore the progress and challenges in local and global fights against anti-Semitism, racism and other forms of bigotry and hatred. She will cover how news events from Ferguson to Gaza can give rise to community unrest, or cohesion, and why some communities are tolerant and others are not. She also will discuss where Ventura County fits into the spectrum of religious and racial tolerance and what residents can do to cultivate a culture of respect and inclusion.

Based in New York City, Lauter has overseen domestic policy, programs and staff in the league’s Department of Legal Affairs, the Center on Extremism and the Research Center since 2006. The speaker, writer and parent has been with the nonprofit organization for 15 years and previously served as the regional director for Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee and as the director of development. Founded 101 years ago, the league works to fight anti-Semitism and all forms of bigotry, defend democratic ideals and protect civil rights for all.

Prior to joining the league’s staff, Lauter served as the community relations director for the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta and practiced corporate law in San Francisco. She has written many articles and opinion pieces on issues affecting the American Jewish community and has appeared on radio and television news programs throughout the world. She received her bachelor’s degree in rhetoric and political science from the University of California, Berkeley, and a law degree from the Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University in New York.

Cal Lutheran’s Hillel Club and Center for Equality and Justice are sponsoring the free event.
