Rhizomatic Optimism: Lecture by Christy Roberts

“Rhizomatic Optimism” explores the state of socially engaged art in the U.S. after the Occupy Wall Street movement. 

Can producers of culture actually make a positive impact in the world? How do culture workers navigate an evolving landscape that is continually enveloped in conversations of social, economic and environmental justice? 

Artist, musician, academic and agitator Christy Roberts composes experiences, images, and objects that attempt to reconcile revolution and escapism. Roberts holds an MFA from Claremont Graduate University, a BFA in Studio Art and BA degrees in philosophy and religion. She teaches at the University of La Verne, Moreno Valley College and Riverside City College, and has organized in/with/at: The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, REDCAT, Made In LA at The Hammer Museum, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Perform Chinatown, Greene Exhibitions, Chats About Change, and The California Poppy Collective, among many others. Roberts was one of LA Weekly’s Best of LA People, 2012, and is currently maintaining her personal art practice, working on a transdisciplinary multimedia collective project titled "Jung Money," and serving as volunteer coordinator at KCHUNG Radio.
