Gender bias in entrepreneurship: What is the evidence and what can we do about it?

Entrepreneur Speaker Series

Gender bias in entrepreneurship: What is the evidence and what can we do about it?

Unconscious gender bias is a heavily studied and discussed phenomenon in the world of work, but to date, it has been given little attention in the world of entrepreneurship. In this talk, Sarah Thébaud will discuss a series of experimental studies in which she measured the extent of gender bias in entrepreneurial pitches and identified the reasons why such bias exists.

About the speaker

Thébaud is an assistant professor of sociology and a faculty research associate at the Broom Center for Demography at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her research focuses on identifying cultural, cognitive and institutional sources of gender inequality in the new economy. Recent work focuses on persistent gender stratification in entrepreneurial activity, investment markets, science and higher education, and families. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and the Kauffman Foundation, among others, and has appeared in several top academic journals. She received her Ph.D. in sociology from Cornell University. Recent media coverage of her research can be found in Newsweek, Time and The Atlantic.
