Testing Information
You may take the exam a maximum of THREE times including practice exams throughout your journey at CLU.
CLU ID is required at the time of testing.
If you choose NOT to fulfil the CORE language requirmenet by taking two semesters of foreign language, you must take the Language Proficiency Exam in a proctored setting with the CAAR office.
You may take the exam any time on your own computer to test your proficiency in your selected language. You will see your score directly after your exam. The exams are multiple choice and no study guide is available because its purpose is to assess your level of proficiency.
CLU's general education requirement is proficiency in a foreign language at the second semester level.
The proctored test will be for proficiency ONLY. Since this is a competency and not a course requirement, students who satisfy the language requirement through examination will not receive course credit; they will only receive content credit.

LPE Scoring for Spanish, French, Russian and German
If you earn a score of 346 or higher for French, Spanish, and German and 400 or higher for Russian, you do not have to take a language class at CLU to satisfy the CORE21 foreign language requirement but may continue studying the language at an advanced level if you choose to do so. Additionally, if you get a score of 281 or higher for French, Spanish, and German and 250 or higher for Russian, print out the result page and submit to the Registrar to be placed into 102 level.
A score of Sem1 indicates that you should enroll in a foreign language class at the 101 level (first semester level). A score of Sem2 indicates that you it would be best for you to enroll in a foreign language class at the 102 level (second semester level).
The Registrar will also receive your score and determine your correct placement in the appropriate language level.
Other Languages
If you are proficient in another language aside from the ones listed above (Spanish, German, French, & Russian), you may request testing in that language by contacting Niusha Farzadfar at (805) 493-3259. Please note that not all languages may be available and fees may apply to secure order, proctor, and grade the exam. These tests are for proficiency ONLY. Upon successfully passing the exam you will be exempt from taking foreign language at CLU, but you will not receive any credits.
