New York: New York is the hub for many businesses including communications and media (advertising, publishing, etc.), nonprofit organizations, finance, trade, and shipping. Many of the film industry's international offices are located in New York.  Many international corporations have offices in NYC as well, and often hire Americans.
Washington,    DC: Virtually every agency in the US government has an international division. In addition, Washington is host to a variety of lobbying groups, nonprofit organizations, consultants ("Beltway Bandits"), and think-tanks.
Miami: Miami is a hub for international shipping and trade. Many companies which manufacture their products elsewhere ship through Miami, and have a Miami office. Hershey Foods, for example, is moving their export operation to Miami.
Philadelphia:    serves as a major import/export center and also offers international banking opportunities.
Chicago:   is the base for several international consulting firms and also has international banking interests.
San  Francisco  and  Los Angeles  serve as a major connection to the Far East.

TRANSLATION CAREERS

Translating and interpretation careers require the strongest language skills. Your personality is an important factor when considering a translation or interpretation career.  If you enjoy working alone, appreciate careful semantic phrasing, have a good eye for detail and precision, you may want to consider translation.   If you're a "people person", think quickly and respond immediately to changes in your environment you should consider interpreting.    People with strong translating/interpreting skills can be self-employed as consultants, or may work for:    Commercial language schools   Publishers Hospitals     Foreign firms located in the US Government Agencies    Export/Import companies    Translation agencies

The hiring process is quite bureaucratic. Jobs must be distributed among the many countries participating in the UN. As a result, few opportunities for entry-level employment exist. In general, candidates must have an advanced degree beyond the bachelor's, knowledge of at least one language in addition to English (preferably Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish), and strong professional experience.   At least ten years experience is required of most positions.  Typical positions include administrators in a variety of fields, civil aviation administrators, development specialists, drug abuse control specialists, economists, engineers, attorneys, management, etc.
