About the Institute

The Institute carries out its purpose by organizing colloquia, conferences, curriculum development, speaker series, and workshops. This institute currently hosts three working groups:

  1. Health and Social Change
  2. Violence and Victimization
  3. Civic Engagement and Community Development

Examples of potential collaborations between these working groups and community groups would be event planning between the Health and Social Change group and the Ventura County HIV/AIDS Coalition, and the Civic Engagement and Community Development group with Ventura County's Obesity Prevention Taskforce.

Throughout Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, existing urban centers and suburban cities are undergoing change and rural land is being developed. There is growing interest in the policies and practices that shape health-promoting community policies and design. The Institute for Healthy and Livable Communities offers a means to utilize interdisciplinary approaches to explore current social problems in areas such as public health, crime, local politics, and community design.
