The Violence and Victimization Working Group explores the social, legal, psychological, and political dynamics of violence and victimization. Included in The Institute's focus are threats of violence, precursors of violence, and the individual, community, and global impacts of violence and victimization.

Research projects

Haco Hoang is working on gang reduction policies in LA to target female gang members; Bob Meadows and Dr. Hoang will be co-authoring a chapter on the problem of transnational gangs in LA like MS-13 and US border security for a criminal justice textbook this summer.

Helen Lim's areas of interests related to this working group is hate crimes. She has presented research on hate crimes against Asian Americans at the American Society of Criminology and Western Society of Criminology. Recently, Dr. Lim gave a talk sponsored by the Center for Justice and Equality entitled, Hate Crimes as Message Crimes: Understanding Harm and the Impact of Hate.

Speakers/events

Last spring, the Violence & Victimization Working Group did a big panel discussion on gang injunctions. In October, Dr, Hoang gave a talk titled "Terrorism, Gangs and US Border Security," and Helen recently gave a talk on "Hate Crimes as Message Crimes"

Curriculum projects

Current work is on developing a course on hate crimes in the near future. Several political science courses (POLS) taught by Dr. Hoang address terrorism, including POLS 200 Global Studies, POLS 361 International Relations, and POLS 432 Political Violence and Revolutions.
