Working Groups & Networks
Faculty and researchers are organized into six working groups housed within the Center. Membership in each of the working groups is geared toward faculty and unaffiliated researchers who seek to connect with those who share similar interests and wish to pursue research, writing, and/or teaching projects.
In a period of rapid globalization and identity politics, the Center offers a means to introduce conversation between globalization and threats to tradition cultural, religious, and ethnic identities, as well as, the manipulations of wage labor and the transformative effects of technology and media. Throughout the Los Angeles region and California, existing urban centers and suburban cities are undergoing change and rural land is being developed. There is growing interest in the policies and practices that shape health-promoting community policies and design. The Center offers a means to utilize interdisciplinary approaches to explore current social problems in areas such as public health, crime, local politics, and community design.
The themes of the working groups reflect the current foci of a variety of grassroots groups, local agencies and community-based organizations.
Examples of potential collaborations between these working groups and community groups would be event planning between the Health and Social Change group and the Ventura County HIV/AIDS Coalition, event planning between the Immigration and Global Cities group and CAUSE, and the Religion and Global Change group with CLUE.
The Center is also fostering collaboration through the development of networks, linking community-based organizations, citizens, policymakers, and researchers. The first of which is the Ventura County Collaborative for Social Justice.
