Lecture on Abuses of Immigrant Detainees
Wed, Dec. 12, 2012 — 7:00pm
3327 Old Conejo Road, Newbury Park, CA
Sponsored by: Conejo Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship
Event Description
Avideotaped lecture by PBS journalist Maria Hinojosa that relates stories of hidden abuse of detainees at U.S. immigration detention centers will be presented at the Conejo Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Newbury Park at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12. The Emmy award-winning reporter addressed the Unitarian Universalist General Assembly in Phoenix on June 23. Hinojosa recounted stories of sexual and physical assaults, skimpy food rations, invasions of modesty and lack of legal recourse based on a year-long Frontline investigation. She anchored “Lost in Detention,” which aired on PBS in October of 2011. The public is invited to the free video presentation. Hinojosa is anchor and executive producer of the long-running “Latino USA” on National Public Radio. At her lecture in Phoenix, she said that privately-run immigrant detention centers lack the government oversight prisons receive and that many Americans will likely be surprised by the treatment of detainees. Rev.Lora Brandis, minister of the church screening the video, said: "Many Unitarian Universalists, other people of faith, and human rights advocates are looking at community visitation programs as a way to help the detainees and their families who are suffering."
