Event Description
“Caring Economics,” a vision for society that challenges conventional economic analysis in search of a more humane and effective model, will be the topic of a Community Forum in Newbury Park on Friday, Jan. 18. Ellen Snortland, an author, journalist and documentary filmmaker, will discuss “The Real Wealth of Nations: Creating a Caring Economics,”a book by social scientist, attorney and best-selling author Riane Eisler. Snortland is a friend and protégé of Eisler, whose 2007 book maintains that America’s economic ills go far deeper than deregulated markets and a few bad apples at the top. Eisler points the way to a sustainable and equitable economy that assigns value to caring for the nation’s greatest economic assets: people and the natural environment. Eisler also authored the best-selling book “The Chalice and the Blade: Our History, Our Future.” Eisler’s“Real Wealth of Nations” asserts that the great problems of our time – poverty, inequality, war, terrorism and environmental degradation – are due largely to flawed economic systems that set the wrong priorities and misallocate resources. The most essential human work, caring and care-giving, is not valued and supported in these economic models, she says, resulting in despair, social tensions, conflicts and ecological destruction. Snortland, a certified presenter of caring economics, will lead an evening of conversation about Eisler’s book. Snortland is an attorney, author, actress and journalist who writes a column for the Pasadena Weekly and contributes to Ms. magazine. She wrote the self-defense book “Beauty Bites Beast: Awakening the Warrior Within Women and Girls,” which is being made into a documentary film. The Jan. 18 program is open to the public and free; donations will be accepted. TheConejo Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is located at 3327 Old Conejo Road in Newbury Park.
