Community Forum on Immigration
Thu, Feb. 28, 2013 — 6:30pm
Swenson Center 101
Sponsored by: Center for Equality and Justice
Event Description
Dr. Molly George (sociology/criminal justice) and Dr. Akiko Yasuike (sociology/global studies) will moderate a panel discussion that focuses on two equally important aspects of undocumented immigration today: Undocumented college students who primarily grew up in the United States and local law enforcement’s increasing role in immigration enforcement. Both Dr. George and Dr. Yasuike received a CEJ Fellowship for Research in Serving Communities in the summer of 2012 and have been conducting research projects on these two issues in collaboration with community organizations and student researchers. Dr. Yasuike’s research examines the experiences of undocumented youth and Dr. George’s research examines the interactions between law enforcement and members of immigrant communities. Five Panelists will discuss these issues and participate in a dialogue with the audience: • Acrenio Lopez, Associate Director, Mixteco/Indigena Community Organizing Project • Greg Prieto, PUEBLO Board Member & Ph.D Candidate, Dept. of Sociology, UCSB. • Commander Eric Sonstegard, Oxnard Police Department, • Rocio Ayala, San Fernando Valley Dream Team Youth Organizer, • Juana Tapia, Organizer, Dreamers without Boarders, Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice - Ventura County.
