CLA - Supporting Success
Founded in 1963, the CLU Community Leaders Association was developed to stimulate the interest of the community in CLU’s academic, athletic and cultural programs. Members are involved in a variety of activities, including social and academic programs and fundraising efforts. Since its founding, the organization has provided more than $1.5 million to enhance academic programs and facilities at the university. Community Leaders Association Distributes $65,000 in Grants
CLA has allocated $65,000 to benefit science programs:
- The exercise science department received $25,300 for a force plate, computer and software for CLU’s Human Performance Lab.
- A $23,000 grant will purchase several instruments to meet the growing demand in the chemistry and environmental science programs.
- The biology department received $16,700 for microscopes for use during laboratory classes.
Grant funds were raised at the 28th Annual Auction in October.
CLA Elects New Officers
Officers of the Board of Directors for 2008 are: President Ernie Sandlin, a Moorpark resident and marketing representative with University Village Thousand Oaks; Vice President Matt Caudill, a Thousand Oaks resident and account manager at Xeonix Communications; Treasurer Bob Jordan, a consultant and writer from Thousand Oaks; Secretary Lauren Godfrey, a Thousand Oaks resident and projects and communication specialist for The Cheesecake Factory; and Campus Representative Bill Bilodeau, a Thousand Oaks resident and CLU geology professor.
Also serving on the board are Michael Adams and Scott Rhode of Woodland Hills; Sue Bauer and Debbie Hang of Westlake Village; Del Bern of Los Angeles; Jake Ganajian of Calabasas; and Norm Lueck, Laura Newman and Gary Trow of Thousand Oaks.
CLA Solicits Membership Renewals, New Members
The Community Leaders Association recently mailed membership renewal applications to its members for 2008. The organization is also seeking new members who are interested in meeting people and enjoying social events while helping university students succeed.
A Single Membership is $50; a Family Membership which includes two family members is $100; and a Business and Professional Membership which includes up to three additional employees is $225.
CLA provides a link between business, community and university leaders. Members assist in raising funds for scholarships and academic programs while serving as university ambassadors to promote campus initiatives and events in the community. Since the organization’s founding in 1963, it has provided more than $1.5 million to the university through gifts of scholarships, equipment and departmental grants. Each year, the CLA sponsors the auction and a golf tournament as well as other social, academic and sporting events. In the past year, the organization has provided more than $100,000 to support academic endeavors.

CLA Presents Award
California Lutheran University’s Community Leaders Association presented its service award to a Westlake Village woman who has provided the organization with leadership and support for 10 years.
Deborah Hang received the William E. Hamm Outstanding Service Award, which is given to members who have shown exemplary service. The award was announced at the CLA Auction on Oct. 27.
Hang has served terms as CLA’s president and treasurer and she chaired the Mathews Leadership Forum for two years. She has served on many CLA committees, sponsored the organization’s auctions and golf tournaments, and opened up her home for several events. She is also a strong supporter of the CLU’s Kingsmen Shakespeare Festival.
The William E. Hamm Award is named in honor of a former CLU vice president who contributed to the development of the university and the betterment of the Conejo Valley community.
