Transforming Campus & School Hazing Culture: A Framework for Prevention

In educational institutions across the U.S., issues of student behavior, particularly around hazing, are pervasive. Researchers have found that 47 percent of students are hazed prior to entering college, and three in five students in college are subjected to hazing.  News reports on hazing in schools and college and university campuses are constant in terms of consequences of hazing, including serious injury and death. Educators in K-12 and college and university settings as well as students, parents and community members all play an important role in changing hazing culture.

Elizabeth Allan, Ph.D., a professor of higher education at the University of Maine and executive director of StopHazing, is a researcher and expert on issues of hazing in educational settings. In this talk, she will draw on findings from her research as well as her own career of hazing prevention efforts to help individuals make critical change in disrupting and changing hazing culture within their institutions.
