Assumption Program for Loans for Education (APLE) Grant

DUE TO THE STATE BUDGET ACT, THE APLE GRANT IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

Eligibility requirements:

  • Must be a legal resident of California
  • Must have completed completed 60 (undergraduate) semester units or 90 quarter units
  • Must apply prior to completing coursework required to obtain initial teaching credential
  • Must be enrolled in a program, enrolled at least half-time, leading to a BA or in a teacher preparation program, making satisfactory academic progress
  • Must be approved to receive or have received an educational loan(s), not in default on any educational loans
  • Must agree to teach in a California public school in one of the areas listed below for at least four years:
    • Designated subject matter areas including mathematics/computer education, science, agriculture, business, and foreign language
    • Special education
    • Designated low-income school*
    • Low-performing (low API) schools*
    • Schools serving rural areas*
    • State special schools
    • Schools with high percentage of Provisional Permit Teachers*

    * These identified areas change annually.  See 2011-2012 Eligible Shortage Areas.

Participants are allowed a maximum of one (1) calendar year leave of absence due to serious illness, pregnancy, active military status, layoffs, reassignment, natural causes or reasons beyond the control of the participant (must be approved by CSAC).
