About

Cynthia Counter’s passion is for teaching. She began teaching mathematics at Ventura College in June of 1994, shortly after earning her M.S. in Math from Claremont Graduate University (CGU) in 1993. She attended CGU on a full tuition fellowship directly after earning her B.A. in Math from Humboldt State University in 1991. While at CGU Cynthia served as Team Leader on a project for Lockheed through one of the math clinics offered through a program for which CGU is distinctive.  It was in this role as Team Leader that Cynthia first gave mathematical presentations that revealed her gift of teaching.

Cynthia has since spent her time teaching and tutoring for Ventura College, Oxnard College, University of La Verne’s Oxnard satellite location, The Princeton Review, and currently with the Adult Degree Evening Program at California Lutheran University (since 2001), the MBA program at CLU (since 2009), and the Math Science Upward Bound program based on the CLU campus (since 2008). She has taught algebra, calculus, geometry, trigonometry, Finite Math, Discrete Math, and statistics (online and traditional), as well as test preparation classes for the SAT and GRE.  Cynthia’s specialty is teaching adult, re-entry students who have math anxiety, and helping them overcome that anxiety by learning to understand and enjoy mathematics. She enjoys spending one-on-one time tutoring students, and gains her greatest satisfaction from seeing students finally understand a new concept, method, or application, and discover the beauty and joy of mathematics.
