Profile

Richard Derderian received his B.A. in History and French from Bowdoin College and his M.A. and Ph.D. in European History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a faculty member at the National University of Singapore from 1999 to 2005 after which he joined the History Department at California Lutheran University. From World Civilizations and the History & Politics of Southeast Asia to Europe & Empires and War & Conflict in 20th Century Europe his courses have spanned both Western and non-Western topics. He is currently preparing two new classes for the Spring 2009 semester entitled "Europe at the Movies: Film & History" and "Enemy Within: Terrorism in Europe." His research has centered on immigration in France and the histories of the North African and Vietnamese communities in particular. His book, Becoming Visible: North Africans in Contemporary France, was published by Palgrave in 2004. His second book project centers on the history of France’s Vietnamese community from the French conquest of Vietnam to the memory work of Vietnamese youth who arrived or were born in France after the fall of South Vietnam.
