Kingsmen on Course to Start Season

VISTA, Calif. - Members of the Cal Lutheran men's golf team concluded its seasons opening competition on Tuesday at the Cougar Invitational hosted by Cal State San Marcos. Casey Lum earned a top-20 individual finish to lead the Kingsmen after shooting three 76's (+4) over the 54-hole event at Shadowridge Country Club.

Players completed a pair of rounds on Monday before finishing the final 18 holes on Tuesday. Matt Snyder led the Cal Lutheran squad through 18 holes after shooting an opening round 74 (+2). He was followed closely by Lum's 76 and Bobby Griffin's 80 (+8).

Lum and Snyder shot matching 76's on Tuesday to close out the event. They were the top two Kingsmen finishers with Lum tying for 15th overall after shooting 228 (+12) and Snyder finishing tied for 32nd at 234 (+18).

CLU newcomer Matt Imbrogno improved his score over each of round finishing 82-81-79 for a total score of 242 (+26). Cody Price scored 81 on his final two rounds and finished at 251 (+35). Griffin finished day one at 159 (+15) before withdrawing from the event.

Point Loma Nazarene won the team title and team member Ryan Ellerbrook won the individual crown after shooting 69-73-72 for a total score of 214 (-2). He was the only player to shoot under par for the event and won by three strokes over runner-up Thane Ringler from The Master's College.

Cal Lutheran will play its first of five regular season conference competitions starting on Sunday, Feb. 12, at Red Hill Country Club in the city of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.

Lindgren a Loyal Leader of CLU Golf

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - It's a trivia question that even the most loyal Cal Lutheran sports fans may struggle to answer. Which head coach at CLU has been on the job the longest? In his 22nd season at CLU, Jeff Lindgren isn't the first name that usually comes to mind.

But the CLU golf coach has been a stable presence in the athletic department, presiding over a program with a history of success.

"Golf is a little bit different in that we are the only off-campus sport, so we don't get a lot of people coming out to watch like you would basketball and football," Lindgren said. "We probably don't get as much recognition, but that doesn't really bother me. I just love being at CLU and being a part of this university."

Lindgren is pulling double duty this season by coaching the men's and women's golf teams.

The women's program is in its first year of existence. CLU announced its addition last March.

The Regals are one of five women's golf programs competing in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

"We have been pushing it for several years and Cal Lutheran was really I think the first one to get the ball rolling," Lindgren said. "Cal Lutheran really pushed the buttons and helped put the process in motion at other schools. Ultimately, the conference jumped in and adopted it as an official sport."

Lindgren, 46, is lifelong Ventura County resident who graduated from Newbury Park High and Cal Lutheran.

He played two years of golf at CLU before becoming a certified PGA instructor. Once he started teaching golf and earning money at Simi Hills Golf Course, he lost his amateur status and could no longer play college golf.

Lindgren was named the CLU men's head coach two years after graduating from the school.

He lives only a mile away from campus with his wife, Kathy, who is also a CLU graduate, and their two children - daughter Jahna and son Kameron.

Lindgren's longevity at CLU stems from a deep loyalty to the university, its staff and his players.

"I have a passion for the game of golf and I have a passion for the school," he said. "We've had a lot of success in our program and a lot of great kids come and go who I am still in contact with on a regular basis. That is the great part. I am not just coaching on a day-to-day basis. I am coaching for the long term."

Once CLU decided to add women's golf, CLU athletic director Dan Kuntz never hesitated in naming Lindgren as the coach.

"Jeff is an amazing kind of unsaid fixture here at CLU, and he has been in a leadership role in the SCIAC for years," Kuntz said. "He has put his footprint on the organization and has so much experience in so many areas. I am not even sure many in our athletic department realize how long he has been here and how much he has done."

Although coaching both teams at the simultaneously presents challenges, Lindgren and his assistants have made it work seamlessly.

The teams practice at the same time at the same courses, and if matches or tournaments conflict, the coaching staff splits duties.

"So far it has worked out great," Lindgren said. "I can walk back and forth between the groups at practice and do my thing and spend time with every player."

Because the women's program was added so late, Lindgren didn't have as much time as usual to recruit.

The roster largely consists of students who were already on campus, plus a few freshmen Lindgren managed to reach before classes started.

"Next year it will be a lot different because I will have had a chance to get on the phone and bring some kids on campus," he said. "I really anticipate having five to seven new girls for the fall of 2012. It will add a nice element to the program bringing in some new talent."

Freshman Brenna Callero heard rumors CLU might be fielding a golf team while she was still attending Thousand Oaks High. Once it became official, Callero's college choice became clear.

"It definitely helped influence my decision to go there. I feel like if they didn't create the team, the school would have been lacking a little bit with positive energy," Callero said. "It's one thing to play in high school, but having that college experience is so fascinating. I feel so much more of a connection now."

For that, Callero can partially thank her teammates Emily Hnath and Emily Bullen. They helped push CLU to start the program by speaking with Lindgren and other university officials.

Hnath, a senior from Minnesota, knew it was her last chance to participate in college sports before leaving for graduate school.

"It's really exciting to have it finally happen and for us to be playing," Hnath said. "This is a nice accomplishment for myself and Emily to have helped get it started. It will be great to see everyone else keep it going in the future and watch it grow."

Although it's only the first season, Lindgren isn't putting any limits on what the CLU women can achieve.

"I am sure there will be some bumps in the road and some ups and downs, but I think we will keep getting better one step at a time," he said. "They want to do well and are competitive and want to represent the school well."

CLU Places Sixth Among Nation's Elite

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. - The Cal Lutheran men's golf team finished sixth out of a 17-team field during the two-day, 36-hole Royal Lakes/Oglethorpe Fall Invite this past week. The competition featured 10 teams ranked in the nation's top-26 including the No. 13 Kingsmen.

Results: 6th (+33)

CLU sat fourth following an opening team round of 298 (+14) led by a pair of two-over rounds from Parker Colvin and Mikey McGinn. Chad Gillespie's 75 (+4) and Derek Field's 77 (+6) contributed to the opening 18-hole score that put the Kingsmen only one shot behind No. 18 Greensboro and No. 19 LaGrange for second place.

On day two each of the team's four scoring players shot within two strokes of their opening round mark. Colvin's 74 (+3) led the way followed by McGinn's 75 (+4). As a team the Kingsmen slid back two spots after shooting a 303 (+19) on day two.

Cal Lutheran finished sixth shooting 601 (+33) for the event. No. 6 Christopher Newport won the team title shooting 585 (+17) by two strokes over No. 12 Huntingdon. No. 5 Methodist, the highest ranked squad heading into the event finished three shots back and in third place.

Colvin tied for 10th place as an individual shooting 147 (+5) for the event. McGinn was one shot back of Colvin and tied for 15th overall. CNU's Joe Evans won the individual title shooting 138 (-4) and was the only player to shoot under par for 36 holes.

Men's Golf Earns Historic Ranking

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - For the first time in program history the Cal Lutheran men's golf team earned a national top-10 ranking according to the latest Golfstat.com Division III polls.

The Kingsmen golf team has had an impressive fall season and earned a No. 9 national ranking in the process. Cal Lutheran outlasted the defending SCIAC champions La Verne during this past weekend's Firestone Grill Collegiate Invitational.

CLU, along with La Verne and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps are each ranked in the top-10 of the Division III polls. Cal Lutheran finished last season ranked No. 20 in the nation and finished fourth as a team in the final regular season SCIAC standings.

The traditional season will take place in the spring and feature five SCIAC rounds followed by the conference championships.

Kingsmen Place Sixth at Firestone Invite

NIPOMO, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran men's golf team finished tied for sixth out of 10 squads competing at the fourth annual Firestone Grill Collegiate Invitational at the Monarch Dunes Golf Course.

Results: T-6th (+40)

CLU placed ahead of the defending Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) champions from La Verne by nine strokes.

"Finishing ahead of (La Verne) is great," said head coach Jeff Lindgren. "It was a brutal course and our guys played very well."

The Kingsmen finished eight strokes ahead of the Leopards and also in front of the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo "B" Team and CSU Bakersfield.

The Kingsmen concluded the 54-hole competition on Monday highlighted by two individuals earning top-20 finishes. Chad Gillespie was even par through two rounds and following a final round 78 (+7) finished tied for 12th overall.

Teammate Parker Colvin's even-par 71 in the second of three rounds highlighted his 221 (+8) for the event placing him 19th overall.

Mikey McGinn, Derek Field and Chad Kimmelshue each contributed at least one scoring round of 18 holes to the overall Cal Lutheran team total score of 892 (+40).

Field started the event with a personal low round of 74 (+3) while Kimmelshue matched that effort to close out competition on Monday. McGinn bookended the tournament shooting 75's (+4) en route to a 230 (+17) finish.

CSU Fullerton won the team competition by 18 strokes shooting 861 (+9) overall. Utah Valley took second place, and Seattle University and UC Riverside tied for third.

CLU Hands Out End of Year Awards

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - On Monday inside Gilbert Arena student-athletes representing each of Cal Lutheran's 19 programs were recognized for their achievements throughout the 2010-11 season at the annual end of the year gathering put together by members of both the CLU athletics department and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

The Cal Lutheran Senior Athletes of the Year were officially announced during the event with Allison Kerr of volleyball earning the honor for the women. Eric Flores and Andrew Giuffrida will share the honor for the men.

Seventy-two Cal Lutheran student-athletes are scheduled to graduate this month including the CLU Scholar-Athletes of the Year in Bobby Sanders of women's water polo and Ray Ostrander of men's cross country and track and field.

All student-athletes from this past season received a token of appreciation for their respective contributions this year with first year CLU members getting a CLU athletics department shirt, second year a sweatshirt, third year a letterman and fourth year a plaque.

Cal Lutheran Athletes Making the Grade

It started in a little room in the humanities building. It eventually moved to the Lundring Events Center, where everyone assumed it would remain for many years. But the numbers just kept increasing, so this year's Cal Lutheran Scholar-Athlete Society induction banquet had to be held in the Gilbert Sports and Fitness Center.

A record-high 112 athletes were honored last Saturday for having a cumulative GPA of at least 3.4. The standard far exceeds the 2.0 needed to be eligible to compete in athletics.

"To me that is the whole Division III philosophy of being a student and a top athlete," CLU Athletic Director Dan Kuntz said. "Our mission is to help them do well in school and do well in their sport and give them an opportunity to carry those on to other things."

The Scholar-Athlete Society started in 2003 with only 36 athletes. Although the amount of teams at CLU has remained the same, the number of athletes honored has jumped exponentially.

This year's total represents nearly 30 percent of the athletes at CLU.

"They are competitive people, and if you let them know what the expectation is, they are going to go for it," Kuntz said. "Once it happens once and someone see it, they realize the opportunity is there for them and it becomes a road map for others to follow."

CLU distance runner Roy Ostrander and women's water polo player Bobby Sanders, who were recently named Cal Lutheran Senior Scholar-Athletes of the Year, have been members of the society all four years at CLU.

In front of a large gathering of relatives, coaches and administrators, each of the 116 honorees received certificates and other small tokens of reward.

"If they have the passion and commitment to their sport, it is a large chunk of their time they have to dedicate to play," Kuntz said. "It's asking a lot because they are not getting scholarship money or a private tutor or special trainer or registration just for them. They are doing this on their own because they want to."

Kuntz believes the environment at CLU is conducive for athletes to balance sports and academics successfully.

"The students have people around them and resources available if they need support, and I think a person tends to thrive more if they feel like they can do more," Kuntz said. "I think those things have really evolved at CLU the last several years and there has been a lot of work to ensure the infrastructure is in place."

CLU Golf Clinches Fourth in SCIAC

HEMET, Calif. - Cal Lutheran golf finished in fourth place at the 36-hole SCIAC Championships at Diamond Valley Golf Course on Monday afternoon. Parker Colvin led the team shooting 149 (+5) and finishing in the individual top-10 overall standings.

Colvin shot an opening round 71 (-1) placing him tied for sixth overall through 18 holes. The Kingsmen total of 298 (+10) matched that of Redlands for third place following rounds of 74 by Chad Gillespie, 75 by Mikey McGinn and 78 from Matt Snyder.

Snyder led CLU in the second round shooting a 73 to finish at 151 (+7) and tied for 11th overall. As a team the Kingsmen shot 307 (+19) two more strokes than the Bulldogs over the final 18 holes falling back to fourth place.

La Verne totaled the lowest two team scores of the event shooting 285 (-3) and 286 (-2) respectively to win by nine strokes over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 580 (+4).

Tain Lee of CMS won the individual title shooting 136 (-8) by four strokes over ULV's Eric Bunge.

Cal Lutheran also finished fourth in the overall conference standings accruing 32 points throughout the six official SCIAC competitions. It is the best finish for CLU since the 2007 seasons.

La Verne won its fifth straight conference title winning four of the six competitions overall with 44 points, followed by Redlands (38.5) and CMS (36.5).

ULV's Andrew Roque posted the lowest scoring average in SCIAC competition at 71.7 strokes, followed by his teammate Bunge and CMS' Lee. Colvin is the top Kingsmen finishing in 11th at 75.4.

Kingsmen in Action at SCIAC Championships

The University of La Verne will serve as host to the 2011 SCIAC Golf Championships, held Monday, April 25 at Diamond Valley Golf Club in Hemet. This year’s SCIAC 36 Championship features four teams among the Top 20 in the national rankings including Cal Lutheran.

The Leopards are No. 6 in the latest Golf World/Nike Golf Top 25 Poll followed by Redlands at No. 10 and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at No. 15.

The first 18 holes of Monday’s championship will commence at 7:00 am with the second round of 18 set to begin at approximately 12:30 pm.

Winners of the last four conference titles, La Verne captured three of the five SCIAC tournaments this season and sits atop the conference standings with 30 points heading into Monday's finale.

Redlands stands a close second in the SCIAC standings with 28.5 points and looks to halt the Leopards' streak of four consecutive conference crowns. The Bulldogs claimed victory at the SCIAC No. 4 on Apr. 5. CMS, which took first place at the SCIAC No. 2 on Feb. 20, resides in third place with 24.5 points followed by Cal Lutheran with 24.

The SCIAC overall team champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, held May 11-13 in Greensboro, N.C.

Kingsmen Keep their Cool at SCIAC No. 5

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - Hosting the final SCIAC men's golf tournament of the season, Cal Lutheran ended its round with a combined overall team score of 300 (+12) to finish in third place at the Tierra Rejada Golf Club Sunday afternoon.

Only three golfers were able to shoot under par for the round; possessing two of those golfers helped La Verne shoots 282 (-6) to finish with the lowest score out of the eight competing teams.

Parker Colvin recorded the lowest Kingsmen individual score, shooting a 35 on the back nine to finish with a 73 (+1).

Tied for the sixth-lowest individual score, Colvin finished six shots behind La Verne's Eric Bunge who recorded a 67 (-6) to lead all individual competitors.

Entering the clubhouse with matching 75's (+3), Chad Gillespie and Chad Kimmelshue combined efforts with Mikey McGinn to finish four shots ahead of a Redlands team that arrived to Simi Valley atop the SCIAC standings, but departed in second place as La Verne now occupies the top spot heading into next Monday's SCIAC Championship.

The Kingsmen currently occupy fourth place in the SCIAC standings, trailing Claremont-Mudd-Scripps by only one-half of a point.

Junior transfer Casey Lum finished his inaugural regular season at Cal Lutheran with a 79 (+7), with teammate Matt Snyder recording an 80 (+8) to complete the Kingsmen's individual efforts.

Competing on a course that featured rollercoaster-like terrain throughout a number of holes, frustrating an increasing amount of competitors as the afternoon progressed, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was able to manage the conditions well enough to finish in second place. Sandwiched between the scores earned by La Verne and Cal Lutheran, CMS shot a combined total of 298 (+10).

Whittier narrowly beat out Occidental to finish amongst the top five as the Poets' 308 (+2-) forced the Tigers to settle for a sixth place finish with its 311 (+23) mark.

One stroke was the difference between seventh and eighth place as Pomona-Pitzer's 313 (+25) forced non-SCIAC affiliate Chapman to settle for eighth place.

The Kingsmen now have seven days to prepare for the SCIAC Championships. Hosted by La Verne, Cal Lutheran will head out to Diamond Valley Country Club in Hemet, Calif. on Monday, Apr. 25 to compete against the conference brethren one last time in an attempt to claim the conference title.

Men's Golf Concludes Braveheart Classic

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Cal Lutheran posted its lowest 18-hole score of the Braveheart Classic on Tuesday and moved into a tie for 14th place with La Verne to conclude the two-day, 54-hole event at Oak Valley Golf Club.

Results: Braveheart Classic

Cal Lutheran finished at 307 (+19) on Tuesday following rounds of 308 (+20) and 309 (+21) on Monday.

Matt Snyder shot his personal best round of the event and for the Kingsmen with a 76 (+4) to finish at 232 (+16) and tie for 57th overall.

Mikey McGinn along with two teammates shot 77 (+5) for his final 18 holes and led CLU overall posting a 230 (+14) and tied for 46th out of 83 qualifying competitors.

Parker Colvin and Chad Kimmelshue posted 77's to round out the scoring four Kingsmen. Chad Gillespie finished Tuesday with a 79 (+7).

LMU's Jake Sarnoff won the individual title at 208 (-8) leading three golfers finishing under par. Anders Engell of St. Mary's (-5) and Alex Hedlund from Redlands (-4) round out the podium finishers.

Long Beach State shot 277 (-11) in the final round in moving up from sixth place through 36 holes to take the team title by two strokes over Loyola Marymount.

Cal Lutheran will host the final of five regular season conference rounds on Sunday, Apr. 17 starting at Noon.

Challenging Start for Kingsmen Golfers

BEAUMONT, Calif. - Cal Lutheran finished day one of competition in 15thplace, shooting a combined team score of 617 (+41) during the two-round opening day at the Annual Braveheart Classic at Oak Valley Golf Club.

With only nine shots separating five teams, the Kingsmen will have an opportunity to climb the leaderboard during Tuesday's final round of action.

Recording a 75 during his first round, Mikey McGinn tied Chad Gillespie's second round effort for the lowest score recorded by a Kingsmen golfer Monday afternoon.

Shooting a combined 153 (+9), McGinn turned in the lowest combined score for Cal Lutheran with Parker Colvin and Matt Snyder trailing their teammate by only three strokes with matching scores of 156 (+12).

Rounding out Monday's action for CLU were Chad Gillespie and Chad Kimmelshue; the former recorded an 83 in addition to his team-low round of 75 to shoot 158 (+14) with the latter finishing the day with a score of 164 (+20).

UC Santa Barbara and Saint Mary's are tied for the team lead with identical scores of 582 (+6), while Loyola Marymount is in third just one shot back.

The third and final round will take place Tuesday morning with a shotgun start scheduled to take place at 8 a.m.

Kimmelshue Takes Top Spot at SCIAC No. 4

PASADENA, Calif. - Chad Kimmelshue shot 74 (+2) to tie for the low score among 50 competitors and paced Cal Lutheran to a second place team finish at the fourth of five regular season SCIAC rounds on Tuesday at Brookside Country Club.

Results: SCIAC No. 4

A hot start by three CLU golfers put the Kingsmen out in the lead by one stroke over Redlands through the front nine. Mikey McGinn shot the low score out at 36, followed a stroke behind by Kimmelshue and Matt Snyder.

The Bulldogs finished first after each of the team's top four scorers shot 78 or better led by Alex Hudland's 75 (+3). However it was Kimmelshue and John Haase of Pomona-Pitzer posting the low score of the day.

McGinn totaled 78 and earned a top-10 finish for the day while Snyder was one stroke behind at 79. Chad Gillespie's 82 completed the team's total score of 313 (+25) one stroke ahead of La Verne.

Cal Lutheran moves into third place overall after earning its best team finish in a conference round since the 2006 season. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was tied for second but an uncharacteristic last place team finish emphasized by an 81 (+9) from the reigning NCAA Division III national champion Tain Lee.

Members of the CLU squad will compete at the two-day UC Riverside Invitational at Oak Valley Golf Course in Beaumont, Calif. starting on Apr. 11.

April 6 is National Student-Athlete Day

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - On Wednesday, Apr. 6 institutions of higher learning will celebrate student-athletes across the country as part of National Student-Athlete Day. The program of the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS), has been celebrated annually on this date since 1987.

"We are very proud to honor hundreds of student athletes competing at CLU in 19 Division III sports programs and soon to be 20 with the addition of women's golf in 2011," commented Cal Lutheran Athletics Director Dan Kuntz. "As Division III athletes our students embrace the philosophy that competing in sports is an educational experience where learning extends beyond the classroom."

Brett Halvaks, the current CLU SAAC President as well as the NCAA Division III SCIAC and Northwest Conference SAAC Representative is receiving and giving out recognition to fellow student-athletes.

"I believe this day provides a wonderful opportunity to recognize what CLU Student-Athletes have accomplished over this past year; both in their sport and in the classroom as well," said Cal Lutheran Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President Brett Halvaks.

The special day honors individuals at both the high school and collegiate levels. There are over 425,000 NCAA student-athletes with Cal Lutheran representing some of the more than 168,000 from Division III.

"It is remarkable to think that CLU, not to mention all Division III student-athletes in general are competing at such a high level while being provided minimal athletic aid," stated Halvaks who is a member of both the Kingsmen cross country and track and field teams.

Appropriately two of Cal Lutheran's eight spring teams will hold true to the student-athlete moniker with women's water polo hosting Redlands at 5 p.m. and baseball heading out to Chapman on a day that recognizes the student-athlete.

Final Round Surge Wins Kingsmen Invitational

LOMPOC, Calif. - The CLU golf team used a third and final round score more than 10 strokes better than the other 13 competing squads on Tuesday to pull ahead and win the Kingsmen Invitational at La Purisima Golf Course.

Results: Kingsmen Invitational

As a team Cal Lutheran improved its score over each round with the top four Kingsmen scorers combining to shoot 312 (+24) and win the team title by seven strokes over Whitworth. The Pirates led entering the clubhouse through the first day of competition by eight strokes with a 36-hole score of 642 (+66).

After neither shot under 82 over the first two rounds, Chad Kimmelshue and Parker Colvin came up clutch on the final day shooting team-low 77's (+5) on the final day aiding the come-from-behind victory.

Teammates Matt Snyder and Mikey McGinn led the squad each shooting a tournament total 239 (+23) and tied for sixth in the individual standings. Snyder shot an opening round 77 (+5) while McGinn posted back-to-back 78's (+6) in his final two rounds.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Tain Lee won going away shooting a 54-hole total of 221 (+5) defeating the field by 13 strokes. He was followed by runners-up Jesse Salzwedel of Whitworth and Alex Fitch of Linfield.

The 14-team field featured five SCIAC schools including CMS who took fourth overall. Redlands, Whittier and Occidental round out the top 10 respectively.

Cal Lutheran returns to conference action on Tuesday, Apr. 5 in the fourth of five regular season SCIAC rounds to be hosted by Occidental. CLU currently sits fourth in the conference standings through the first three competitions.

CLU Stays on Course to Another Solid Finish

FONTANA, Calif. - In a low scoring affair featuring several under-par rounds Cal Lutheran finished fourth in the team competition at the third of five regular season conference rounds at the Sierra Lakes Golf Course on Tuesday.

Results: SCIAC No. 3

Parker Colvin finished tied for fifth and led the Kingsmen with his 72 (E) round. Chad Kimmelshue's 74 (+2), Matt Snyder's 75 (+3) and Chad Gillespie's 77 (+5) complete the top four CLU scorers compiling a score of 298 (+10).

At the par 72 course there were four individuals that shot under par including three-way tie for first place. Eric Bunge and Andrew Roque from La Verne, and Tain Lee from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps shot 69 (-3) to lead the way.

ULV won the team competition shooting 281 (-7) with each of its top four scorers shooting even par or better. Redlands and CMS tied for second 15 strokes back at 296 (+8) and CLU two back of them at 298 (+10).

Through the first three SCIAC rounds the Kingsmen squad boasts two individual top-10 scorers in Matt Snyder and Colvin. Cal Lutheran in comfortably in fourth place overall after taking third in the second round and fourth in the opener.

Cal Lutheran will host the Kingsmen Invitational in Lompoc, Cailf. starting on Monday, Mar. 28.

Kingsmen Take Third in Texas Tournament

BLANCO, Tex. - Finishing with a team score of +40 (614), the Cal Lutheran golf team captured third place in the 14-team field that competed at Valeer Creek Golf Club in the TLU Intercollegiate Invitational.

Trailing tournament host Texas Lutheran by two strokes entering the final day of competition, the Kingsmen just could not catch up to the eventual tournament champions who extended their lead with a final day team score of 288.

Cal Lutheran was able to improve upon their results from Monday; shooting 312 in the first round of the tournament, the Kingsmen were able to shave off eight strokes with a final round team score of 304.

Turning in the lowest CLU score on Monday with his +2 (74) effort, both Parker Colvin and Mikey McGinn shot a 73 to lead the Kingsmen during their final round of competition.

The pair also comprised two of the top-ten lowest combined individual scores recorded throughout the tournament. Parker's combined score of +3 (147) was the second-lowest individual total out of the 72 participating golfers, teammate McGinn finished tied for the seventh-lowest score with his +9 (153) effort.

Finishing Monday with duplicate scores of +7 (79), Casey Lum and Chad Gillespie finished just two shots away from one another on the day as the former finished the tournament with a +6 (78) in his final round of competition, with the latter recording a +8 (80).

Lum finished with an overall score of +13 (157), Gillespie ended his tournament shooting +15 (159).

Chad Kimmelshue shot +11 (83) Tuesday afternoon to finish with a combined score of (164) , with teammate Quinn Proctor finishing with his best one-day score as a Kingsmen by shooting +3 throughout the day.

Proctor's Tuesday total of 75 was a 14-stroke improvement from his previous day's results, as he finished tied for the 12th-lowest round recorded during Tuesday's competition.

Up next for the Kingsmen is their their third SCIAC meet of the season scheduled to take place on March 22nd at Pomona-Pitzer.

Kingsmen Finish Day One in Second Place

BLANCO, Texas - With a combined score of 312 strokes, the Cal Lutheran golf team enters the final day of competition trailing host Texas Lutheran University by only two shots at the TLU Intercollegiate Invitational.

Leading the way for the Kingsmen was sophomore Parker Colvin as he shot a +2 (74) on the 6, 864-yard course at Valeer Creek Golf Club to finish with the third lowest individual score recorded on Monday.

Juniors Chad Gillespie and Casey Lum each finished with identical +7 (79) scores, with freshman Mikey McGinn rounding recording an 80 to finish within the top-25 individual scores turned in throughout the day.

Going out with a 41 and returning with a 41, sophomore Chad Kimmelshue ended his first round tied with the 29th lowest overall score at +9 (81), while freshman Quinn Procter finished his inaugural day of action with a score of +17 (89).

Currently tied for second place with Mary Hardin-Baylor, Cal Lutheran is one of a number of schools that possess a realistic chance of finishing as tournament champions as only ten shots separate the top eight teams.

Concordia University (TX) is currently in fourth place, finishing with a first round team score of 315, followed by LeTourneau University (318), Schreiner University, Trinity University and Houston-Victoria who are all tied for sixth place at 320.

Single Stroke the Margin of Defeat

LOMPOC, Calif. - In the second of two dual matches between Cal Lutheran and Chapman the Panthers got the better of the Kingsmen by one stroke at La Purisima Golf Course on Tuesday afternoon. CLU's Matt Snyder and CU's Van Pierce tied for the low individual score at 76 (+4).

Results: CU 313, CLU 314 - F

It was a near identical score to the previous meeting at Tustin Ranch Golf Course only six days prior after both teams shot matching 313 (+25) stroke scores. The Panthers matched their 313 while Cal Lutheran took one extra shot to provide the margin.

Today three of the four scoring players for both teams matched their counterpart's total. Chapman's Addison Devine shot 77 (+5), one stroke better than the No. 2 Kingsmen score put up by Jack Williams and Tyler Straeter of 78 (+6).

Overall the back nine played much easier than the front with 10 of the 12 competitors completing the final nine holes in under 40 strokes. In contrast the lowest total after the first nine holes was 40 put up by three different players.

Cal Lutheran will take part in the ConCan Invitational on Mar. 13-15 hosted by Texas Lutheran University in ConCan, Tex.

Colvin is on Course for Improvement

It wasn't hard to find Parker Colvin last summer. The Cal Lutheran sophomore spent most of his time at Alisal Ranch Golf Course in Solvang working on his game. The results have shown this season.

Colvin was recently named Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Male Athlete of the Week after shooting an even-par 72 to finish in the top 10 of the second SCIAC round.

The Solvang native was the first CLU golfer to earn weekly conference honors in nearly four years. Christian Colunga earned the distinction in 2007.

"Coach wanted us to go out and practice to get ready for the upcoming year, and I went out and hit balls every day," Colvin said. "It really helped me. It's been a great start, and I just hope it keeps going."

The youthful Kingsmen have no seniors on their roster this season. The team features six freshmen, five sophomores and three juniors.

CLU is ranked No. 14 nationally in the Golf World/NIKE Golf Division III Coaches Poll.

"Our goal is to make it to the national championships, and we are looking pretty good right now," Colvin said. "We have to finish second or first in the next couple of SCIAC rounds, and if we do that, I think we will be looking even better."

Colvin was a unique multisport athlete at Santa Ynez High. He played football and golf.

The 5-foot-11, 172-pounder was a running back and wide receiver in football, and thought about playing at CLU.

He contacted head football coach Ben McEnroe, but then found out the golf team was adding fall tournaments to the schedule.

"I love golf, so I decided to just stick with that and had to tell the football coach I couldn't come and get my pads," Colvin said. "But I still go to the games to watch and miss it a lot."

The single-sport focus allowed Colvin to dedicate more time to practicing his swing on the range and refining his technique.

"My iron game has been great," said Colvin, who finished in 10th place individually in the SCIAC last season. "It's something I have really been working on and I am hitting it very well. I need to work on my short game a little bit more though."

The Kingsmen are leaving for Texas on Friday to participate in the TLU ConCan Invitational hosted by Texas Lutheran University.

"Not many Division III teams get the opportunity to travel to places like Texas and Georgia like we have," Colvin said. "It's great to get to go to other states and play some other courses out there. I think we have a good chance at winning this tournament."

Sweeping into first place: The CLU baseball team extended its winning streak to four straight games after sweeping a three-game series with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with three one-run victories.
