The Cal Lutheran senior was down to his last throw in the shot put
competition at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships.

Knowing everything was on the line, Flores launched a throw of 57 feet, 5.75 inches to capture the title by only one centimeter.

"I can still hear everyone yelling and cheering," Flores said. "There
aren't many times you have that happen in your life, the last moment to
see if you can muster everything you have and truly dig down deep. But
as soon as I started turning through that last throw, I felt it. I knew I
had truly done it. I am still amazed. One centimeter. What a thrilling
end."

The dramatic victory capped a stellar All-American career for Flores at CLU.

Along with winning the shot put title, he defended his Division III hammer throw title (213-11).

The back-to-back wins came despite Flores not even knowing if he could compete in the championships because of a back injury.

Flores waited until the morning of the hammer throw event to decide if he was strong enough to perform.

"I threw the hammer and won that after a couple of throws and bowed
out," Flores said. "But getting ready to throw the shot, I didn't think
my body could handle it. But we decided to have me warm up and see how
it went and I actually felt pretty good. After that, I just went for it
and it was probably the best I felt technically."

The 5-foot-8, 235-pound Flores spent only two seasons at CLU after
transferring from Black Hills State University (S.D.), but he will leave
a lasting legacy.

The Oxnard native, who grew up in South Dakota, holds CLU program
records in the hammer (223-5) and shot (59-2.25) by wide margins.

Flores was named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country
Coaches Association Division III Men's Field Athlete of the Year in both
his seasons at CLU, and was the two-time Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Male Track and Field Athlete of the
Year.

"I am very satisfied with how things went and very thankful," Flores
said. "My family is here and my friends are here and my girlfriend his
here. Everything that I need is in California and probably less than 25
minutes from CLU. I've been extremely happy."

Flores has one semester remaining academically at CLU to obtain his bachelor's degree.

He plans to continue training at Moorpark College while pursuing a professional throwing career.

The ultimate goal for Flores is to be wearing red, white and blue and representing his country on the highest stage.

"It's been my desire to be a pro since I started this and eventually
be in the Olympics," Flores said. "Many people have said that is a
rather big thing to ask for, but sometimes you just have to shoot big
and see what happens."

Flores Ends CLU Career at USA T&F Championships

DELAWARE, Ohio - Within a 24-hour period Eric Flores
secured two NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field national titles after
winning Friday's shot put competition in dramatic fashion. On his final attempt
Flores' try landed a quarter-inch farther than runner-up Andy Novak of
Wisconsin-La Crosse and outlasted one final competitor for the victory.

Results: Men's
Hammer and Shot Put

Through the first three rounds Flores' best mark of 17.29 meters ranked
second best to freshman Paul Davis of McMurry (TX). His second round distance
of 17.39 meters was tops among the field of 19 competitors and allowed him to
go last in the final three rounds.

Davis' mark remained atop the leaderboard through to the start of the sixth
and final round. After Novak equaled Flores' mark in the fourth round he took
over the lead with his final toss of 17.51 meters (57 feet, 5.5 inches) and only
four competitors left.

Two throwers fell short of the mark with two to go including Flores and
Davis, respectively.

Flores had thrown over 18 meters this season and needed to muster up a heave
covering at least 17.52 meters on his final attempt to take over the lead. Once
the judges measured out the landing point he realized he had done just enough.

The tape measured exactly 17.52 meters (57 feet, 5.75 inches); only
one-quarter of an inch farther than then leader Novak. Needing to outlast one
final attempt to capture the shot put title, Davis would foul for the fourth
straight round and Flores would earn his second crown in as many days.

Earning all 20 Kingsmen points thus far Flores has single-handedly put Cal
Lutheran in second place in the team standings with one day of competition
remaining. Central College currently leads the team standings with 24 points
with CLU, Wisconsin-La Crosse and Washington (MO) tied in the runner-up
position.

Eric Rogers will provide the final scoring opportunity for the men's squad
competing in Saturday's triple jump competition. He will be battling a pair of
WLC athletes including top qualifier Isaac Vazquez, and long jump champion Paul
Turner from La Verne.

The top eight finishers from each individual event
score points and earn All-America status by virtue of their placement. A fifth
place or better finish by Rogers would put CLU in first place pending the
finishes of Vazquez and Kellen McCrary of WLC.

Flores Retains National Hammer Throw Title

Senior Eric Flores is now the back-to-back

podium at the NCAA National Championships, this time as a senior in 2011. His
seasonal best of 68.10 meters (223 feet, 5 inches) is more than 22 feet clear
of his nearest competitor and an improvement on his title clinching distance
last year.

The men's hammer throw will take place at 3 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on
Thursday, May 26.

After taking 15th in the shot put at last year's championships Flores is
seeded second heading into the event this season. His mark of 17.61 meters (57
feet, 9.5 inches) from the Pomona-Pitzer Invite on April 9 is just over one
foot short of top qualifier David Pless from Bates.

The men's shot put gets underway on Friday, May 27 at 4:30 p.m. EST.

Eric Rogers (Triple Jump)
In his first year of competition on the track and field team Rogers leapt
onto the scene and is one of only two freshman to qualify for nationals. His
mark of 14.90 meters (48 feet, 10.75 inches) in front of the home crowd during CLU's
SCIAC Quad Meet ranks eighth best heading into the event.

He is only one of nine athletes in the nation to surpass the NCAA automatic
qualifying mark of 14.85 meters, led by top qualifier Isaac Vazquez of
Wisconsin-La Crosse who went 15.48 meters (50 feet, 9.5 inches).

The men's triple jump will begin on Saturday, May 28 at Noon EST.

On the women's side Kahovec and Garrett will both be making their first
appearance on the national scene in track and field this season.

Toccoa Kahovec (Steeplechase)
Kahovec posted the seventh fastest time this year in the 3,000-meter
steeplechase (10:40.25) doing so at the Cal/Nevada Championships on March 26. She
is one of only nine who finished in an NCAA automatic qualifying time led by favorite
Kimber Mattox of Willamette (10:23.34).

The women's steeplechase is set to start at 9 p.m. EST and will conclude Friday's
competition schedule. The Regals will feature team members in back-to-back
events including Kahovec and Garrett.

Britlyn Garrett (Javelin)
Garrett's heave of 42.61 meters (139 feet, 9 inches) puts her eighth amongst
the 23 competitors in the javelin. Jill Shaner of Stockton is the heavy
favorite posting the top regular season mark of 48.75 meters, nearly three
meters farther than the rest of the field.

The women's javelin will open the final day of competition on Saturday, May
28 at Noon EST.

Kahovec and Garrett have the oldest marks in the
entire field with both notching their seasonal bests in the month of March.

Flores Repeats as West Region Field AOY

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross

- Seven total members from the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen and Regals track and
field teams participated in Saturday's Westmont Qualifier meet, one of
the few events remaining this season that provides an opportunity for
student-athletes to record a time or distance strong enough to earn a spot at
the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships.

Results: Westmont Qualifier Results

Turning in a jump of 14.90
meters (48 feet, 10.75 inches) earlier this season at the SCIAC Quad Meet No. 3
(Apr. 16), one-half meter farther than the distance needed to qualify for a
spot at the national championships, Rogers followed that effort with NCAA
provisional jumps in his next two meets at the SCIAC Championships and Saturday's
event.

Jumping 14.34 meters (47
feet, 00.75 inches) in his first attempt of the afternoon at Westmont Track,
Rogers was the only Kingsmen participant able to record either a provisional or
automatic qualifying effort throughout the day.

Also matching her NCAA
provisional-worthy effort recorded earlier this season at the Westmont Collegiate
Classic (Mar. 26) was CLU high jumper Erica Whitley. Returning to the very same
track where she originally recorded a provisional efforts of 1.65 meters (5
feet, 5 inches), Whitley replicated her performance by clearing the exact same
height Saturday afternoon.

The distance is the
second-highest height ever cleared by a Regal in the school's history.

Recording provisional marks
at the SCIAC Championships in the 1500 meter run and discus throw events, both
Toccoa Kahovec and Adam Hayes each wanted to solidify their spots at the
national championships with performances worth of an automatic bid.

Although both fell short of
their respective goal, the provisional time and distance recorded by each may
still be strong enough to secure an opportunity to compete in the final NCAA
event of the 2011 season.

Positions for each individual
event at the NCAA Championships is initially filled by student-athletes who
automatically qualified based upon results recorded throughout the season. Provisional
qualifiers, ranked by time/distance recorded, will fill all remaining spots
until a complete field of competitors has been organized.

All Kingsmen and Regals who
have recorded provisional efforts will discover their ultimate fate next week
once all pre-championship track meets have taken place.

<![endif]-->"Take
a moment, enjoy this, and soak it in because this is a once-in-a-lifetime
moment."

If
his father was not in attendance to offer his words of advice last Friday at the Southern California Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Track and Field Championships, who knows what Adam
Hayes would have done after recording a new personal record in the discus of
49.19 meters (161 feet, 5 inches), a distance that would earn the junior from
El Dorado Hills, Calif. the first individual title of his career.

"I
definitely would have been frazzled driving to the airport," Hayes readily
admits.

His
father knew, his track and field coach Matt Lea knew, and shortly before
competition began on Friday, Adam himself would find out a piece of information
that would start a series of events that would become one of the most memorable
36 hours of his life.

Trusting
the advice of his friends, father, and coaches, Hayes stepped onto the podium
at Strehle Track and bathed in the applause that encircled him, paying special
attention to a particular section of the track where the crowd was a bit more boisterous in their appreciation of his disc-throwing triumph.

His
teammates knew as well.

Physically,
he was amongst hundreds of his peers who gave their all on one of the 38 events
that took place throughout the two-day conference championship at Pomona-Pitzer.
Mentally and emotionally, however, he could only focus on what might be taking
place in a room 375 miles from the podium from which he now proudly stood upon.

Only
after joining the rest of his teammates in a group picture, a decision
primarily fueled by the words of wisdom that emanated from his father once
again, did the magnitude of his accomplishments begin to settle in.

After
winning one title earlier in the afternoon, Hayes could now begin his journey
back home to earn his second title of the weekend - uncle.

Even though he only possessed two years of competitive throwing experience in the discus, Hayes has his sighs set firmly on one goal from the moment he arrived at Cal Lutheran.

In
his freshman season at Cal Lutheran back in 2009, Hayes competed in his first
SCIAC championship meet, finishing 12th in the discus with a throw of 36.69
meters (120 feet, 4.50 inches), recording the highest finish in any of the four
events he participated in that weekend.

The
following season, Hayes advanced another five positions in the final standings,
improving on his 2009 effort by another 7.5 meters (24 feet, 7.25 inches).
Providing a glimpse of the progress Hayes made throughout the year, the
newly-earned mark further motivated Hayes, serving as the mid-way point between
where the skill set Hayes possessed at that time, and the overall goals that
were now established within.

As
a sophomore, Hayes increased his personal best by almost 20 feet; another 16
feet would complete his ultimate goal of possessing the farthest distance ever
recorded by a Cal Lutheran thrower in the discus.

Knowing
that a shot at the Cal Lutheran discus record of 48.83 meters (160 feet, 2
inches) set in 1986 by Torii Lehr was a realistic possibility leading up to
this year's SCIAC Championships, Hayes was caught off-guard mere hours before
he was scheduled to board the team bus last Friday.

"I
received a phone call from my dad around 7:00 a.m.," described Hayes, "he asked
me what I was doing. I responded ‘trying to sleep dad' and wanted to hear what
he had to say. It was then when he informed me that my sister was going into
labor."

Regardless
of his decision, Hayes knew that a trip somewhere, either to Claremont for that
weekend's meet, or to a hospital room in Sacramento was in his immediate
future. It was then when the junior thrower made the gutsiest decision of his
life.

"This
is the SCIAC Championships, championships dad."

Hayes
knew that the birth of his new nephew may take place during his track and field
season as the original due date threatened to conflict with the NCAA Outdoor
Track and Field Championships scheduled to take place from May 26-28 in
Delaware, Ohio.

He
understood that the possibility of missing out on the birth of his nephew
existed due to his current schedule of classes, an upcoming week of final
exams, and a rigorous track and field schedule filled with three season-ending
meets prior to the NCAA Championships.

Never
in his wildest dreams, however, did he expect to make a decision of this
magnitude at this time of the month. It would have not surprised Hayes if these
events took place towards the latter weeks of May; receiving news like this,
mere hours before he was expected make the trip to the campus of Pomona-Pitzer
with his track teammates was an entirely different situation.

"I
knew my dad was going to fly down to watch me compete," said Hayes "but I also
wanted to let coach Matt (Lea) know about my sister going into labor earlier
than expected."

"He
initially spoke to me during our 10 a.m. team meeting," Lea stated, "and told
me about his sister's situation. I was informed that his dad was going to fly
down for the meet; originally he was planning on compete in the javelin on
Saturday as well. I support my team, and want all of my teammates to be
supportive of one another as well."

Earlier
in the day, a decision was made; it was now up to Hayes and nobody else to take
full advantage of the opportunity that presented itself.

"I
wanted to record a strong throw from the very beginning and make everyone else
chase me," explained Hayes, "instead of placing myself in a situation where I
needed to chase someone else for the title."

In
his inaugural throw of the weekend, in the first of two events Hayes was
scheduled to participate in, the junior showed first-hand why the discus was
his specialty as he recorded a distance of 49.19 meters (161 feet, 5 inches).
Mere moments after entering the ring, Hayes virtually ended the title-winning
hopes of every other competitor by recording new personal and Cal Lutheran
record.

In
front of his teammates, his friends, and his father, who arrived to the
facility in time to watch his son enter the on-deck staging area prior to his
record-setting throw, the magnitude of the day's events finally had caught up
to him.

"When
the tape measure passed 160 (meters), all I could think was... wow. I wanted to
cry a little bit because there were a lot of emotions involved. To finally get
that (distance) was pretty nice."

With
one event already completed, and one individual championship already in his
possession, Hayes, his Kingsmen teammates, and fellow competitors made the
short walk from the discus ring to the hammer pit.

"I
enjoy competing in the hammer throw because it is my second favorite event.
Once my flight ended, I was waiting around to see how everyone in the second
flight performed. That group was filled with a lot of big names, including my
teammate Eric Flores, and just wanted to see who the top-nine throwers who
earned a spot in the finals were."

One
of the first competitors to compete in the hammer, Hayes' dad encouraged his
son to enjoy the events that were unfolding in front of him, and made no qualms
about the situation at hand.

"My
dad looked at his watch, looked at me, and just told me that ‘if we are late,
then we are late, but you have to throw'. That was it."

At that point of the afternoon, Hayes had
already taken off all the athletic tape that snaked around his fingers and
hand, packed his shoes and equipment, and found a prime location behind the
backstop to cheer on his teammate, and current SCIAC and Division III record
holder Flores.

As
surreal as the day had already been, Friday's story took another unforeseen
twist for Hayes as he had to give up his spot to another fan in attendance -
Hayes ended up earning one of the nine coveted spots in the final round.

Setting
his second personal record of the afternoon, Hayes ended up throwing the
16-pound implement 44.89 meters (147 feet, 3.25 inches), capping off his most
successful day ever recorded as a Kingsmen.

"It
still has not fully hit me that I am the SCIAC champion, but I am ecstatic that
I am now the school record holder. With everything that was going on around me,
my mind was now on my sister because I am a family-oriented person."

Learning
about his sister's condition during the short drive to Ontario International
Airport with his father, Hayes was excited about the possibility of being at
the hospital during the birth of his nephew. With Andrea still in labor, the
decision Hayes made earlier that day had paid off in ways that he could not have
imagined.

"My
dad knew I was making the trip back home, no other family member knew about the
results of the meet, or my appearance at the hospital."

Returning
to the same Sacramento hospital where his other older sister Rachelle gave
birth to her niece last year, in a room just four doors down from the one
Andrea now occupied, everyone was shocked and excited to not only see Hayes,
but hear of his success that took place mere hours prior to his arrival.

"I
was hoping that she did not give birth to my nephew while I was competing, to
see that everyone was ok once I arrived was quite a relief. My sisters are my
best friends, and I was excited that I was able to make the trip in time."

It
was not until 4:00 p.m. the following day when Andrea was able to give birth to
the newest member of the family, a healthy baby boy that Hayes' himself was
able to hold for a couple of hours before making the flight back to Thousand
Oaks before classes resumed on Monday..

Within
36 hours, Hayes became a champion, and an uncle, setting two new personal
records and once school record in the process. But at that moment in time, with
all of his family now out of the room enjoying a break of their own, the only
thing that mattered to Hayes was his sister Andrea and his nephew who was now
resting peacefully against his chest, cradled in his arms.

As
exciting as the events of last weekend were, Hayes has little time to rest and
relax as there are still a number of track meets that remain on his schedule.
Recording a NCAA provisional distance with his record-setting throw in the
discus, Hayes can only compete in Ohio at the end of the month right now as an
at-large participant.

Student
athletes who record a distance of at least 52.72 meters (172 feet, 11.50
inches) automatically earn a spot at Nationals; those that fall short of that
mark, but are able to throw 48.00 meters (157 feet, 5.75 inches) at a
NCAA-sponsored event have the potential to complete as
an at-large participant.

"As
of right now I know I am literally on the bubble, most likely on the outskirts
looking in. I am just praying that on top of my school work, and all the other
things that are going on I can throw an additional seven feet. I know that deep
down inside with a good wind, and a good effort, I can accomplish that."

CLU Hands Out End of Year Awards

On Monday inside Gilbert Arena student-athletes

field teams, were named SCIAC Athletes of the Week for their respective performances at the
Occidental Invitational.

Helping set a new school record in the 4x400-meter relay, Juarez and her teammates became the second relay team in Cal
Lutheran history to break the four-minute barrier in the event. Running the
anchor leg, Juarez helped break the 22 year-old school record as the quartet completed the race in a time of 3:57.09.

This performance took place only days after Juarez improved
her personal best individual time in the 400 meter race at the SCIAC
Championships. Crossing the finish line in 57.38 seconds, the time was just.08 seconds short
of the NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark for the national
championship meet.

Juarez now holds the second-fastest 400 meter time ever
recorded in the program’s history.

Winning an individual title in the discus at the SCIAC Championships just a few days prior to his arrival at Occidental, Adam
Hayes improved upon his title-winning effort to set a new school record for the second time in eight days by recording a distance of 49.73
meters (163 feet, 2 inches).

With that performance, Hayes also enhanced his NCAA Division
III provisional mark originally set at the SCIAC Championships, and is now
ranked 18th in the nation.

This is the third time in the 2010-11 academic year that Cal
Lutheran student-athletes earned both conference awards, the first occasion since
Allison Kerr (Volleyball) and J.D. moved to the Lundring Events Center, where everyone assumed it would
remain for many years.
But the numbers just kept increasing, so this year's Cal Lutheran
Scholar-Athlete Society induction banquet had to be held in the Gilbert
Sports and Fitness Center.

A record-high 112 athletes were honored last Saturday for having a
cumulative GPA of at least 3.4. The standard far exceeds the 2.0 needed
to be eligible to compete in athletics.

"To me that is the whole Division III philosophy of being a student
and a top athlete," CLU Athletic Director Dan Kuntz said. "Our mission
is to help them do well in school and do well in their sport and give
them an opportunity to carry those on to other things."

The Scholar-Athlete Society started in 2003 with only 36 athletes.
Although the amount of teams at CLU has remained the same, the number of
athletes honored has jumped exponentially.

This year's total represents nearly 30 percent of the athletes at CLU.

"They are competitive people, and if you let them know what the
expectation is, they are going to go for it," Kuntz said. "Once it
happens once and someone see it, they realize the opportunity is there
for them and it becomes a road map for others to follow."

CLU distance runner Roy Ostrander and women's water polo player Bobby
Sanders, who were recently named Cal Lutheran Senior Scholar-Athletes
of the Year, have been members of the society all four years at CLU.

In front of a large gathering of relatives, coaches and
administrators, each of the 116 honorees received certificates and other
small tokens of reward.

"If they have the passion and commitment to their sport, it is a
large chunk of their time they have to dedicate to play," Kuntz said.
"It's asking a lot because they are not getting scholarship money or a
private tutor or special trainer or registration just for them. They are
doing this on their own because they want to."

Kuntz believes the environment at CLU is conducive for athletes to balance sports and academics successfully.

"The students have people around them and resources available if they
need support, and I think a person tends to thrive more if they feel
like they can do more," Kuntz said. "I think those things have really
evolved at CLU the last several years and there has been a lot of work
to ensure the infrastructure is in place."

Regals Relay Team Breaks 22-Year Record

Members of the Cal Lutheran track and

all-time in Regals track and field history. A pair came while anchoring relays
and another doing it herself in the 400 meters.

The CLU women's 4x400-meter relay squad of Melissa Muntzel, Lauren Rohach,
Nicole Camarillo and Juarez not only completed the four lap race in under four

recorded Saturday afternoon, both Cal Lutheran track and field teams finished
just short of their respective goals as the Regals and Kingsmen finished in

their 2010 SCIAC titles in the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase, men's hammer throw
and shot put, taking home three of the five individual titles claimed by Cal
Lutheran.

Competing in her inaugural SCIAC Championship meet, Regals freshman Erica
Whitley took the top spot in the high jump Saturday afternoon with her mark of 1.62
meters (5 feet, 3 inches), joining Cal Lutheran teammate Adam Hayes who also
earned his first-ever individual title in the discus.

Kahovec, Hayes, Eric Rogers, and Flores were also responsible for all six
NCAA-worthy marks.

Kahovec recorded provisional times
in the 1,500 meters (4:37.82) and steeplechase (10:57.05), and Hayes recorded
his provisional mark in the discus (49.19 meters/161 feet, 5 inches), with Rogers
leaping his way to his provisional distance in the triple jump (14.36 meters/47
feet, 1.50 inches).

Recording provisional and automatic qualifying distances in the hammer
throw (64.53 meters/211 feet, 8 inches) and shot put (17.51 meters/57 feet,
5.50 inches), Flores ended his final SCIAC Championship appearance by setting a new meet record.

Starting and finishing her day as a member of both Regals relay teams,
Julea Juarez had quite a busy day, earning team points in all four of her
finals heats.

Earning third place finishes with teammates Kendall Sauter, Amy Galipeau,
and Jaleesa Robinson in the 4x100 meter relay, and Melissa Muntzel, Lauren
Rohach, and Nicole Camarillo in the 4x400, Juarez also earned two
second place finishes in both the 200 and 400 meters during the final
day of competition in Claremont.

Throughout the weekend, two races captured the collective attentionof the
crowd at Strehle Track. In the men's steeplechase, Pomona-Pitzer's Anders Crabo
claimed the top spot by .06 seconds using a dive across the finish line to win the race. The other was the women's 200, a sprint
that saw Juarez nearly earn Cal Lutheran's sixth individual title as she
was beaten to the tape by only .005 seconds--the third-smallest
margin of victory in any of the 20 combined men's and women's races that took
place throughout the second day of the meet.

The schedule of events that Caius Radu faced during day two was just as
demanding as the one faced by Juarez as the Kingsman sprinter earned a finals
berth in five different events.

Finishing with the third fastest time in the 100 meters (10.89), Radu
followed that efforts with a fifth place finish in the 200 (22.30)
and recorded a 15.46 in the 110 meter hurdles. Combining efforts with teammates
Jordan Williams, Cody Butcher, and Dennis Clay to earn valuable team points in
the 4x100 meter relay, Radu capped his grueling two-day tenure at Pomona-Pitzer
by running the second leg of the Kingsmen's 4x400 (3:24.89).

Jumping his way to another 10 team points for the Kingsmen, Eric Rogers
followed his fifth place performance in the long jump (6.70 meters/21 feet,
11.75 inches) Friday afternoon with his efforts in the triple jump, a distance
far enough to earn second place in addition to a provisional spot in the NCAA
Championships.

Finishing with a total of 153 team points, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
Athenas claimed the SCIAC team title, Redlands and Cal Lutheran finished in
second and third place with their respective totals of 107.50 and 103 points.

Rounding out the final standings for the women were Occidental (91.50
pts.), La Verne (63 pts.), Whittier (33 pts.), Pomona-Pitzer (21 pts.), and
Caltech (17 pts.).

Earning 67 points throughout the event, Cal Lutheran finished in fourth
place amongst the eight competing teams. Winners of the last 19 consecutive men's
team titles, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (141 pts.) was forced to settle for a
second place finish in this year's meet, falling nearly 26 points shy of
Redland's first place total (166.66 pts.).

Finishing with 23 more points than the Kingsmen, La Verne captured third
place with Occidental (61 pts.), Pomona-Pitzer (31.33 pts.), Whittier (12 pts.),
and Caltech (10 pts.) comprising the bottom-half of the men's standings.

comfortably in second place two points ahead of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Earning 33
team points in their first day of action, the Kingsmen arrive at the half-way

With the
exception of the 3000 Meter Steeplechase, preliminary times were recorded for
all other running events throughout the afternoon.

Capping off
Friday's action, Regals distance runner Toccoa Kahovec led the steeplechase
from start to finish, claiming her second consecutive individual title with her
time of 10:57.05. Finishing nearly 20 second faster than the next competitor,
Kahovec improved on last season's SCIAC championship-winning time of 11:06.00 by
almost 10 seconds.

Other final
events taking place on the campus of Pomona-Pitzer included a number of throwing
events, competition dominated by Cal Lutheran names on both sides.

Led by Erica
Carter's throw of 36.14 meters (118 feet, 7 inches), an effort that helped the
senior capture third place, four Regals throwers finished in the top-ten in the
Women's Discus. In addition to Carter, Tori Dahl (34.53m/113 feet, 3 inches),
Britlyn Garrett (31.84m/104 feet, 5 inches), and Thea Cornell (31.53m/103 feet,
5 inches) finished in fourth, ninth, and 10th place respectively.

Jackie De la
Paz and Aly Anderson earned second and third place individual titles in the
Women's Hammer Throw, with Anderson beating La Verne's Bernadette Smith by two
inches to help the Regals earn additional team points.

Anderson's
throw of 42.60m (139 feet, 9 inches) was second only to De la Paz' 47.09m (154
feet, 6 inches) effort.

Erica Carter
finished in sixth place in the event, recording a distance of 39.56m (129 feet,
9 inches), completing a CLU-dominated event that saw Regals claiming half of
the top six spots.

Continuing
an effort that began with their female counterparts, the Kingsmen also dominated
both the discus and hammer throw events, frustrating many of the student-athletes
participating from the other five SCIAC schools.

Earning
first place in the discus with his recorded distance of 49.19m (161 feet, 5
inches), Adam Hayes not only claimed another Cal Lutheran individual
championship, but recorded a new personal record that doubles as the farthest throw
ever recorded by a Kingsmen in the event.

In all, four
of the top seven finishers in the discus wore CLU violet and gold as Eric
Flores (47.69m/156 feet, 5 inches), Peter Vermillion (44.72m/146 feet, 9 inches),
and Roy Diaz (43.17m/141 feet, 8 inches) finished in second, sixth, and seventh
place.

Flores
became the final Kingsmen to earn an individual title, beating his title-clinching
effort recorded last season by an additional .37 meters (1 foot, 2.50 inches).
Winning the event with a throw of 64.53m (211 feet, 8 inches), the senior
finished nearly twenty feet ahead of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Taylor Berliant who
had to settle for second place with his throw of 59.03m (193 feet, 8 inches)
which was more than 20 feet further than the third place distance recorded by
one of his teammates.

The final
day of competition at the SCIAC Track and Field Championships will
begin at 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon. In all, 24 individual, four relay, and
two team titles will be awarded throughout the day.
