that of the combined Beavers effort in the opening 20 minutes of action. She
also came away with six of the 24 CLU first half rebounds. Cal Lutheran more
than doubled up Caltech in both points, 42-15, and rebounds, 24-11, in the
first half.

Wright

different Regals stepped onto the hardwood tonight with 12 of them scoring.
Keely Anderson came off the bench to pour in 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting from
the floor, including 2-for-3 from long range. Jessica Pruitt, Chelsey Hastigan

CLU shot at a 48.4 clip and connected on 7-for-18 three-pointers. Natalie Stone

<![endif]-->THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - A 65-47 Thursday night home win over Whittier secured Cal Lutheran's spot as
one of four teams that will play in the SCIAC Women's Basketball Post-Season

3-point attempts while scoring a game-high 19 points.

Box Score: CLU

18-4 lead just over seven minutes into the first half. The Regals led by as
many as 15 points before a late Poets scoring run cut the deficit to four with
under two minutes left in the opening period.

Cal Lutheran took control in the second half maintaining at
minimum a six-point cushion throughout the final 20 minutes. The Regals
controlled the boards earning a 24-15 advantage on the glass, including nine
offensive rebounds.

The Regals outside shooting went cold in the second half,
but the offense managed to score 12 points in the paint and 10 more at the foul
line. Rachel Heagy scored eight of her career-high 12 points in the second half
and created matchup problems for the Poets defense during her 14 minutes of
floor time.

took all 40 minutes and a complete team effort for the Regals to exit their
home court victorious this evening. In a game that saw nine ties and eight lead
changes, it was as evenly matched on paper as it could have been tonight for
CLU and ULV.

The
Leopards held a slight shooting edge, 37.3 percent to 36.8 percent, but it was
the one that came off the fingertips of Moore, on a pass from Erica Whitley, with
.3 seconds to play that mattered the most. As the ball bounced around the rim
and fell through the net the home bench exploded and the fans in the stands
went wild.

Setting
the stage was Chelsea Hastigan who sank her final three-pointer of the night
with 1:23 to play, sparking a 6-0 run to close out the game. Tonight's victory
not only clinched the win, but also a season sweep over La Verne, whom CLU defeated
75-70 earlier this winter.

With
free-throws on the line down the stretch, ULV connected for 11-for-15, a
slightly higher percentage at 73.3 than CLU at 72.2 on 13-for-18 shooting, but
the one made by Jazmyne Porter with 17 ticks left was the most clutch one of
the night as it put CLU in a good position. The foul committed by the Regals,
sending Mia Roseboro to the line was just what the home squad needed as Whitley
pulled down the rebound, her fifth of the night, to set up the final play of
the game.

While
both teams started hot, exchanging three-pointers to kick things off, it was
the home squad who controlled much of the first half. CLU opened a nine-point
lead following a pair of free-throws by Cameron Jones, but ULV went on a 12-0
run to take a 23-22 advantage with just over seven minutes to play. CLU would
close out the half scoring six unanswered points to take a 36-33 lead into the
locker room.

At
the 13:19 mark of the second stanza, ULV took its first lead of the half after Hastigan
knocked down one of her four three-pointers to knot things for the ninth time
of the evening with 13:30 in regulation. CLU would chip away until the final
buzzer sounded.

Three-pointers
and turnovers were the key plays in the contest. ULV took 27 shots from behind
the arc, knocking down 11 with Megan Musashi going 4-for-6 en route to a game
high 21 points. CLU looked to Hastigan for four as she and Moore finished with 12
points apiece.

Turnovers
hurt both teams as each committed 21. ULV came up with 10 steals and CLU with
eight, which led to 16 and 18 points, respectively. Cal Lutheran was able to
double-up La Verne in the paint, scoring 24 points inside to the Leos 12.

Cal
Lutheran grabbed 40 rebounds, 14 on the offensive end of the court and Moore
led all players with nine. La Verne
pulled down 34 as a unit.

Whitley
was the only other Regals player to finish in double figures and also led all
players with six assists. Amanda Copas added 13 points and eight rebounds for
ULV.

Tonight
teams from across the SCIAC promoted awareness and raised funds for breast
cancer research by participating in "Play4Kay". The Kay Yow

that develop in the paint, but Roy Dow believes the Cal Lutheran
women's basketball team has a strong foundation in place.

In his fourth season presiding over the Regals, Dow can see the progress that might not always be apparent on the surface.

"At the real macro level, I think there has been growth to get to
where we are now," Dow said. "We have a more mature roster with more
juniors and seniors than freshmen and sophomores for the first time in
four years. I think we are making strides and will continue to make
strides."

The two-steps-forward, one-step-back nature was on display last week
when CLU (12-7, 5-3) followed big wins over Occidental and Chapman with a
road loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

When Dow arrived at CLU, he created a notecard with certain
benchmarks he wanted to reach. The Regals were only 1-12 against
Northwest Conference opponents and 2-9 against Chapman in the preceding
seven seasons.

Those records stretched to 1-16 and 2-11 after Dow's first season.
But in the past three seasons, CLU is 7-2 against the NWC and 2-1
against Chapman - with the one loss coming by a point.

Dow scheduled games against nationally ranked opponents to see the
level CLU needed to aspire to and what players it needed to recruit to
get there.

"My big thing is not to have the narrow goal of only being SCIAC
champions," Dow said. "The goal is to be contending at the national
level. If we are competing to that goal, the SCIAC championship will
take care of itself."

Dow has been impressed with the overall makeup of this season's team - from its athleticism down to its blue-collar work ethic.

"This team has a resilience and it has a sense of itself and a great
team chemistry," Dow said. "There is a whole different kind of toughness
and mental maturity with this group."

That toughness and resiliency is perhaps best exemplified by Channing Fleischmann and Meaghan Goodenough.

Fleischmann suffered a stress fracture in her lower leg yet has managed to play in 15 games.

Goodenough, a Simi Valley High graduate, has been dealing with balky
knees since she arrived at CLU as a result of anterior cruciate ligament
tears.

Both players spend a large portion of the day draped in ice and monitoring their pain threshold.

"Meaghan just went to have an MRI in her knee and pretty much told
the doctor, 'Look. I know you are doing an MRI, but I am going to tell
you guys when I will stop playing basketball. You can make a
recommendation, but it's my senior year and I am going to be the one to
say that,' " Dow said. "But that is how she is, and that is what makes
her great."

Dow knows Cal Lutheran is far from a finished product. The most immediate priority is bouncing back from the loss to CMS.

The Regals are in fourth place in the conference standings, and only the top four teams make the SCIAC Tournament.

"Right now we are not really worried about wins and losses," Dow
said. "Right now it's about coming out and being better for our game on
Thursday and going back to being ourselves."

Regals Unable to Avenge Earlier Season Loss to CMS

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> Normal

time this winter to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 61-52 in league action.

Box Score: CMS 61, CLU 52 - F

After

basketball that saw 10 lead changes and four ties.

CLU
connected for 45.2 percent of its shots from the floor in the opening period. The

offensive boards for 11 points.

After
the intermission, nothing seemed to fall for the Regals who shot a dismal 15.6
percent from the hardwood while CMS knocked down 40.6 percent of their
opportunities. The CLU three-point game was hot, though, with Hastigan and
Cameron Jones combining to go 4-for-5.

Jones
came off the bench to pour in 12 points, shooting 3-for-7 from the field and
hitting all three three-point attempts she took.

In
the end, CMS out rebounded CLU, 41-37, although each team grabbed 17 offensive
boards. Rachel Heagy came away with seven rebounds in just 10 minutes of action
for CLU. A Regals trio of Jones, Erica Whitley and Channing Fleischmann finished
with six rebounds apiece.

Hastigan
had four steals to go along with her 13 points and Jones added one.

Cal

Kalika Tullock was the leading scorer with 18 points and added seven rebounds
for CMS.

Cal

impact scoring the opening four points of the game. She played an efficient 13

basketball, but it was the Regals who came up with a 7-0 run to close out the
period and sustain the momentum. CLU looked to four different players over the
final 4:17 in the half to erase the one point deficit and take a 30-24 lead
into the intermission.

Cal Lutheran used deep shots in the first half as five different Regals
connected for a three-pointer as they combined to shoot 50 percent from behind
the arc. Jazmyne Porter came off the bench to drain a pair in the first half before
finishing the night 3-for-3 from three-point range.

The Chapman defense brought pressure on the Regals, using a full-court press
throughout the game. The CLU squad, however, remained calm as a unit. After
committing eight first half turnovers, Cal Lutheran handled the ball well over
the final 20 minutes of action with just four miscues despite the numerous double-teams
and defensive prowess of Chapman.

In a team effort head coach Roy Dow noted that, "Meaghan [Goodenough]
and Erica [Whitley] played like poised veterans and kept the flow of the game moving
forward."

The second stanza was more of the same as the Regals never
trailed and led by as many as 14 at 54-40 with 8:42 in regulation.

Dow added, "Channing [Fleischmann] set the tone in the
second half, playing hard as she went to the floor for numerous loose balls."

The Regals got three steals, three from Whitley and a pair from Fleischmann
and the pair combined for three blocks.

CLU was also tough on the glass pulling down 44 rebounds while Chapman came
away with 32. The home squad finished with 12 offensive rebounds and Shana
Moore was responsible for six of them. She finished the night with nine
rebounds to tie teammate Whitley for a game-high.

Whitley was the only other player for CLU to reach double figures with 11
points. S

Emily McCoy poured in 15 points for Chapman (11-8) to tie Porter for the game high.
Both Anne Yoshimura and Kimi Takaoka turned in 11 point nights for the Panthers.

Cal Lutheran (11-6) will be on home at Gilbert Arena on Thursday, Jan. 26 when

Occidental nearly responded with a three of its own in the final minute to
cut the deficit to a single point. Following a scramble for the rebound
Occidental's Michelle Lo was open as she knocked down a 3-pointer to pull the
Tigers within one. However the Occidental bench called time out moments before
releasing the shot, negating the basket.

Occidental did not score again until a time expiring 3-pointer by Makenzie
Brandon ended the game. She led all players with 20 points and 14 rebounds
playing the full 40 minutes. However the CLU defense held firm forcing her to
score using 21 shots from the field and to commit eight turnovers.

In the early going it was a defensive battle, in which CLU took a 6-2 lead,
but the Tigers found a groove and converted that into a 13-9 advantage. The
Regals regained the lead when Fleischmann connected on all four of her free throws
after the OXY bench was called for a technical foul with 7:43 in the opening
period.

The teams remained neck in neck, never separated by more than a point for
the remainder of the half. A pair of Stephanie Scamman free-throws with 37.8
seconds to go gave the Black and Orange a 23-22 advantage at the break.

Both teams succumbed to the top-notch defense with CLU and Oxy shooting 23.3
and 29.2 percent from the floor, respectively. CLU out-rebounded Occidental 23-19
in the opening 20 minutes. The Regals came away with 10 offensive boards that
they were able to convert into 12 points.

The second stanza saw another see-saw stanza of basketball. Each team shot
better with CLU hitting on 37.5 percent of their shots while the Tigers
finished the second half at a 33.3 clip.

Fleischmann scored 13 second half points to finish with a team leading 17.
The junior converted 9-for-10 free-throw chances while tying for a team-high
eight rebounds. Erica Whitley pulled down eight boards as well and chipped in
with 12 points, three assists and three steals, both to lead the Regals.

Rachel Heagy came off the bench to finish with seven rebounds, including a
game high four offensive while adding 10 points as the third Cal Lutheran
player in double figures. Porter also came off the bench to spice things up,
adding seven points and four rebounds for CLU.

Occidental (13-3, 5-1 SCIAC) was paced by Makenzie Brandon both offensively
and defensively with a game-high 20 point, 14 rebound double-double, adding two
steals, a block and an assist. Michelle Lo scored 14 points with a pair if

legacy that guided her to Cal Lutheran.

Porter's mother, Roslyn (formerly Roslyn Boatwright), played
basketball at CLU from 1984 to 1988. Porter was eager to follow in her
mother's footsteps on the hardwood for the Regals.

"Cal Lutheran was at the top of my list because I knew that was where
my mom played," said Porter, a Long Beach Wilson graduate. "We came and
took a tour of the campus and met the coach and I just fell in love
with it right away."

Porter has been providing a spark off the bench for the Regals in
their last few games. The 5-foot-8 junior guard is averaging 9.9 points,
4.5 rebounds and 21.5 minutes per game.

"I feel like I am the type of player who brings energy to the game
and gets everybody going," Porter said. "Everyone has their different
roles and we have set captains, but in reality we all have to be leaders
for each other. That is what I am trying to do."

Porter wears No. 11 just like her mother did at CLU, and has her
mother's old team sweatsuit jacket that she wears around campus.

"I am trying to figure out some way to get her statistics or maybe
some game films, but she said no one ever taped their games back then,"
Porter said. "But she did have a few stat sheets from her sophomore
year. She was one of the fastest players on her team and one of their
best players."

Porter's parents are both registered nurses, and faithfully attend every one of the children's basketball games.

Porter's mother still occasionally plays basketball with Porter and
her younger sister, Janelle, who is a junior at Long Beach Wilson.

"If we have free time, we will go to the park and play one-on-one
games," Porter said. "My mom has played ball all her life. She says that
I can never get the ball from her, but I do sometimes. It's a lot of
fun."

Porter appeared in all 31 games last season for Long Beach State, averaging 2.5 points in 12.8 minutes per game.

If Porter had any anxiety about transferring to CLU, it was quickly erased by her teammates.

"I felt right at home from the first time we all played in the gym,"
Porter said. "They all were very warmhearted and showed me where things
were and how to do things. It's nice to feel that way coming from
somewhere totally different."

Cal Lutheran (9-5, 3-1) has won seven of its last eight games and
faces a big challenge on the road Thursday against Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference leader Redlands (10-5, 4-0).

"I really want to get that win for our seniors," Porter said. "I want
to take the SCIAC and win it all for my team. That is my biggest goal. I
want to put us on the map and I know we are a good team and can do it."

Regals Edge Leopards, 75-70

Cal Lutheran overcame a five point second half deficit to earn a 75-70 road

57, CLU 53 - F

Cal Lutheran scored the opening eight points in large part
to a pair of 3-pointers from Chelsey Hastigan. After the Regals opened the game
shooting 3-of-5 from the floor, they made only 1-of-16 the remainder of the
first half and finished the period shooting just 19 percent.

Meanwhile CMS chipped away and pulled even with 1:13 left in
the half following a Kimberly Scamman 3-pointer. A free throw by teammate Kalika
Tullock, the only one of the half for CMS, provided the Athenas a 22-21 halftime advantage.

The CMS first half offense came from just three players, led
by Scamman with nine. The Athenas missed several chances to extend their lead
making just 1-of-8 free throws in the frame. In contrast Cal Lutheran connected
on 11-of-15 from the charity stripe to keep pace.

The Athenas extended their second half lead to as many as 11

arc.

Coming into the game CMS was the worst 3-point shooting team
in the conference making less than 21 percent of its attempts. On Thursday the Athenas connected on 6-of-11 from downtown at a 54 percent
clip. Meanwhile the Regals came in with the best SCIAC mark at 38 percent, but
knocked down just 6-of-22.

CLU battled to remain in contention and Erica Whitley took the Regals on her back
reeling off seven unanswered points to pull CLU to 46-42 with 5:17 to play.

With 22 seconds remaining Hastigan connected for her
third 3-pointer of the night to keep CLU within striking distance.
On the ensuing CMS possession she was called for a foul, her
fifth of the night. None of the final four shots by CLU fell as time expired.

Cal Lutheran shot better in the second half to finish at
28.3 percent overall and went 17-for-24 at the free throw line. Whitley led the
squad with 15 points and seven boards, and added a game-high four steals. Hastigan
finished with 14 points for the Regals and teammate Meaghan Goodenough was credited
with a game-high four assists.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (9-5, 3-0 SCIAC) finished the night
39.3 percent from the floor despite going just 7-for-21 from the free-throw
line. Maddie Barns also finished in double figures for CMS with 13 points.

CMS pulled down 46 rebounds to CLU's 38 and grabbed five
more offensive boards with 15. Frannie Hemmelgarn came away with a game-high 13

60, WC 52 - F

It was an ominous start for Cal Lutheran spotting Whittier
the opening six points of Thursday's contest. Tanisha White knocked two of her
first three 3-point attempts and as a team Whittier sank 3-of-6 from downtown
to start the game. However the Poets would make only 1-of-18 from beyond the
arc the rest of the way.

Cal Lutheran made 4-of-9 from deep in the opening half
including three straight triples from Chelsey Hastigan. Her hot start helped
the Regals keep pace with the Poets before a 10-0 scoring run to close out the
first half put them up 30-24 at intermission.

Jazmyne Porter took over in the second half scoring 13 of
her team-high 19 points. Leading by just one point with two minutes to go
Porter scored six of the game's final nine points and knocked down 4-of-4 free
throws in the final 30 seconds of regulation.

Whittier closed its second half deficit to a single point on
five different occasions. A pair of Shana Moore baskets, and 3-pointers from
Keeley Anderson and Hastigan preserved a lead Cal Lutheran maintained over the
final 22 minutes of play.

This balanced scoring proved the difference as the Cal
Lutheran bench outscored its counterpart 30-4. The CLU starting five scored 30

Deanna Purcell contributed game-highs of 23 points and three blocked shots in

Riviera 90-66 in other Friday action inside Gilbert Arena on the home floor for
CLU basketball.

Cal Lutheran 63,
Northwestern (MN) 51 - F
Taylor Autry, Erica Whitley, Chelsey Hastigan and Meaghan Goodenough provided
the offense during an 11-2 run to open Friday's finale. Three of the team's
five first half 3-point attempts came during that stretch and gave the Regals a
lead they would hold the entire way.

Trailing by 11 Northwestern responded with 10 unanswered
points including a pair of triples from Chanel Madson. Twice she scored to put
the Eagles within one, but the Regals countered with 11 consecutive points to go
ahead 34-22 with 3:26 left in the opening frame and led by 14 at intermission.

Nine of the 10 Regals that saw first half floor time
contributed in the scoring column. Whitley knocked down both of her 3-point
attempts and led the squad with three assists and a blocked shot. However the
CLU reserves provided solid individual performances in Friday's victory.

Jazmyne Porter contributed 16 points, six rebounds and six
steals in 20 minutes off the bench. She combined with Cameron Jones to score 28
of the team's 32 bench points.

Northwestern's reserves totaled just four
points.Cal Lutheran enjoyed a double-digit lead throughout a majority of the second
half as Northwestern never closed within six points over the final 20 minutes
of regulation.
Northwestern's Mollie Sir collected a game-high 17 points
including a trio of 3-pointers. She led the Eagles with five steals and three
assists in the loss.

Teammate Jessica Fife collected 15 rebounds and went 3-for-4
at the foul line. Fife was the lone Eagle to miss at the charity stripe as
Northwestern knocked down 15-of-16 for the game.

Albion 57, William
Smith 43 - F
During game two of the afternoon Albion College got off to a hot start while
the William Smith College Herons struggled with the scoreboard showing a 35-8
advantage for the Britons at the intermission. The "no quit" mentality of
William Smith kept the squad in the game until the final buzzer sounded. Albion
walked away victorious, 57-43 despite the Herons bridging the gap in the final
period.

Albion looked to senior Patty Rewa who put on a show at both
ends of the court producing an 18-point, 10- rebound double-double, leading all
players in both categories. Also earning a double-double for the Britons was
Nicole Dennis, who scored 14 points and pulled down 10 boards as well.

William
Smith's Jacqueline Murphy also had 10 rebounds.
After a 2-for-26 shooting effort in the opening stanza,
William Smith came back to shoot 42.9 percent from the field in the second
half. The Herons' leading scorer on the afternoon was Erin O'Brien with 15
points.

Bowdoin 90, Rivier 66
- F
In the tournament opener Bowdoin College and Rivier College
tipped-off for the first of five games on the day as the Posada Royale and
Men's Thriven Financial for Lutherans Tournament's overlap today. The Polar
Bears doubled up the Raiders in the opening half, taking a 40-20 lead at the
intermission, and cruised to a 90-66 victory.

As a squad Bowdoin shot 64.3 percent from the field in the
second half to finish at a 50 percent clip. Four players reached double figures
with Jill Henrickson pacing the pack and all players with 20 points and five
steals. She and teammate Ellery Gould each grabbed seven rebounds to lead all
players. Kaitlin Donahoe handed out a game-high seven assists to go along with
a 15-point, four-steal performance.

Rivier also shot much better in the second half at 53.8
percent to finish at 47.8 overall in the game. The Raiders never stopped
battling as the senior-freshman sister tandem of Amanda and Deanna Purcell led
the attack with 18 and 13 points, respectively. Jaclyn Penniman came down with
six of the 24 Raiders' rebounds in the contest.

The conclusion of the Best Western Posada Royale Holiday
Classic will take place on Saturday, Dec. 31, with Rivier and William Smith
kicking things off at 2 p.m. followed by host Cal Lutheran versus Bowdoin at 4
p.m. and concluding with Northwestern and Albion at 6 p.m.

CLU Prepares for Basketball Tournament Double-Double

Cal Lutheran men's basketball coach Rich Rider never has trouble

return. They come for the competition, and the great weather doesn't
hurt either.

Website: Men's Tournament
Website: Women's Classic

"The Midwest teams always enjoy traveling out West during this time
of year," Rider said. "The word is out this is a first-class tournament,
and we have a lot of teams penciled in to come every three years on a
rotational basis. They come from all over the country and they really
enjoy it."

The Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Tournament will be held Dec. 29-30 at the Gilbert Sports and Fitness Center.

In its 22nd year, the four-team tournament is the longest-running Division III men's tournament in the West Region.

Basketball fans can double their pleasure at CLU on Dec. 30 because
the women's team is hosting its Posada Royale Holiday Classic Dec.
30-31.

"We are very fortunate to work with great sports information
directors and athletic trainers because it makes for a long middle day,"
CLU women's coach Roy Dow said. "My tournament has six teams, so that
means there are five games that day. That is a lot of basketball."

Having the tournaments overlap requires a good working relationship between the CLU basketball coaching staffs.

"Rich and I have so much mutual respect for each other and it makes
it really easy," Dow said. "So much good comes out of this for our kids
and for the university. We are getting our name out there and giving
exposure to our kids. Plus, we have as good of a facility as there is in
Division III."

Like Rider, Dow never has a problem drawing teams for his larger tournament.

"We are in one of the most beautiful parts of the country in Thousand
Oaks," Dow said. "Most of the teams come into town the 27th and do
sightseeing stuff. It's a convenient spot for them to be able to travel
to those places and have a good time."

Rider could have easily expanded his tournament over the years, but
he wanted to keep it at just four teams. This year, the visiting teams
are Washington College (Md.), Carthage (Wis.) and Geneva (Pa.).

The men hold a banquet each year in which two players from each team are seated at tables together.

"They are forced to get to know one another and it is really an
interesting dynamic," Rider said. "Oftentimes they become friends. In
this day and age with the electronic media, they stay in close contact.
They realize they are good guys too and they realize they have the same
problems they do."

But the ultimate goal of the tournaments for both coaches is to prepare their teams for future games.

"It is good competition and it is a great lead-in to conference
play," Rider said. "The competition we see here is equal to or better
than what we face in conference."

Cal Lutheran Clutch in Crunch Time

A 21-point lead and some clutch final minute free throw shooting staved off a
