Spring 2012 New Undergraduate Students

Applying for Financial Aid: The Process

  1. Complete the 2011-12 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Make sure to list CLU’s school code - 001133. File your FAFSA as soon as possible.
  2. If you know you are eligible for Cal Grant, visit the Cal Grant website to see if you need to submit any documents and change your school of enrollment to CLU – 001133.
  3. If you have been select for a process called Verification or if CLU needs additional information from you, you will receive a letter stating exactly what items we need submitted to the Office of Financial Aid.
  4. Complete steps 1-3 as early as possible to ensure that you receive notification of your Financial Aid Award.

Notification that your Financial Aid Award is ready to view will be sent to your callutheran.edu email account. Once you receive that notification, continue with these steps:

  1. It is CLU policy that students are responsible for accepting or rejecting each component of their Financial Aid Awards. Please login to WebAdvisor to Accept or Reject each award listed. If you would like to change your decision at a later date on a particular award, please contact the Financial Aid Office.
  2. If you accept a Federal Stafford Loan, you must submit both Entrance Counseling and a Master Promissory Note  to complete the process.
  3. If you accept a Federal Parent PLUS Loan, your parent must complete the loan application, which requires a credit check. If your parent’s credit is approved, your parent must then complete a Master Promissory Note.

Accept Your Financial Aid Award
Once you have submitted your enrollment deposit and received your Award Letter, login to WebAdvisor and accept or reject the components of your Financial Aid Award.

Loan Priority Deadline
If you are borrowing loan funds to assist with meeting your educational expenses, all loan application processes must be completed by this date to ensure your funds arrive promptly.

First Week of December

Pre-Bill Mailing
CLU will send a pre-bill that shows your charges and estimated financial aid. Please read this information thoroughly. All forms and payment for fall semester, including a payment contract, must be submitted by the first Friday in January to the Student Accounts Office. If you do no receive your pre-bill by December 15, contact the Student Accounts Office directly.

Beginning of January Priority Deadline for Housing
If you are planning to live on-campus, you will need to pay the $400 housing deposit and complete the Residence Life Application & Contract online. Housing will not be assigned until CLU has received your enrollment deposit, the housing deposit, and the application.
First Friday in January

Financial Clearance
The payment contract, all financial aid applications and documents, and payment of Spring semester charges, must be completed by this date. If these items are not received or complete, students will be charged a penalty fee and may be at risk of having their classes dropped.

How to Estimate Amount Owed to CLU

To estimate the amount owed to CLU for the Spring 2012 semester, first add tuition, fees, and, if living on-campus, room and board from the COA chart above to get your estimated charges. Secondly, add all of your financial aid (without including Federal Work-Study) to determine your total financial aid. Then, subtract your total financial aid from your estimated charges. This is the estimated amount owed to CLU.

First-Year Students - Academic Scholarships

The academic criteria listed for each scholarship is an approximation based on awards for students entering in Fall 2011. If you are admitted for the Spring 2012 semester and are eligible for an academic scholarship, you will receive 1/2 of the yearly amount for the Spring semester. In the following 2012-2013 academic year, as long as you remain eligible, you will receive the full year amount of the scholarship.

Academic Scholarships are renewable for three additional years for incoming first-year students as long as the student maintains a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and completes at least 12 units per semester to maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress.

Transfer Students - Academic Scholarships

The academic criteria listed for each scholarship is an approximation based on awards for students transferring in during Fall 2011. If you are admitted for the Spring 2012 semester and are eligible for an academic scholarship, you will receive 1/2 of the yearly amount for the Spring semester. In the following 2012-2013 academic year, as long as you remain eligible, you will receive the full year amount of the scholarship.

Academic Scholarships are renewable for up to three additional years based on the student's grade at entry as long as the student maintains a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and completes at least 12 units per semester to maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress.

Academic Scholarships for transfer students are renewable up to the number of years remaining to complete four years of education between CLU and other school(s) attended (for example, a student who entered CLU as a sophomore would be eligible for three total undergraduate years of institutional gift assistance).

If a student requires an additional semester or year beyond the timeframe above to complete his or her undergraduate course work, an Additional Semester/Year Appeal letter must be submitted outlining why it is taking longer than the time allotted to complete a degree.

Other Academic Scholarships

CLU Presidential Scholarships
Presidential Scholarships were established to recognize and reward graduating high school seniors in the top tier of our applicant pool who embody the University’s educational and leadership goals. Students who come to campus for Honors Visit Day will interview for the top scholarships offered by the University. These scholarships start at $17,000 and range up to full tuition and are renewable for up to four years provided the student maintains a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and Satisfactory Academic Progress. The scholarships awarded through this program will replace any academic scholarship the student received at the time of admission. CLU Guarantee Scholarship
CLU offers first-year and transfer students who are also admitted to UCLA, UCSB, UC Davis, UC Berkeley, or UCSD a renewable scholarship based on the Cost of Attendance (COA) at CLU and these public institutions. The scholarships make the cost of attending CLU approximately the same as the cost of attending one of these five University of California schools. To receive the CLU Guarantee Scholarship in subsequent years, the student must maintain either a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (Freshmen) or a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 (Transfers) and Satisfactory Academic Progress. Minimum GPA Requirement

Students who receive CLU Academic Scholarships are required to maintain at 3.0 GPA. Transfer scholarship winners are required to maintain a 2.5 GPA. Cumulative GPA will be assessed at the end of each semester. Students who fail to meet these cumulative GPA requirements will be placed on Scholarship Warning and subject to the following process:

Students will have one semester to raise the GPA to the required minimum. Students who fail to meet the GPA requirement at the end of the warning period will lose their scholarship until their GPA meets the minimum standards. Students may appeal the loss of scholarship, in writing, to the Office of Financial Aid. However, only significant extenuating circumstances will be considered.
