CLU Guarantee Goes North!
The CLU Guarantee is going north! Beginning Fall 2010, students who are admitted to UC Berkeley or UC Davis and also to CLU (and meet the other eligibility requirements below) will be eligible to receive the CLU Guarantee Scholarship. These schools are in addition to UCLA and UCSB.
This scholarship is available to first—year students and transfer students in the traditional undergraduate program and the Adult Degree Evening Program (ADEP).
Private Education, Public Price
The CLU Guarantee Scholarship was established to provide an opportunity for eligible students to attend CLU for the cost of specific University of California institutions, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB); the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) and the University of California, Davis (UC Davis). If a student is admitted to any of these institutions, CLU will match the cost of attendance!
The University of California is not affiliated with and does not endorse or support the CLU Guarantee Scholarship Program

Scholarship Information:
- The CLU Guarantee Scholarship replaces any Academic Scholarship the student was awarded. FOR ADEP students, it does not replace the ADEP Grant.
- When receiving the CLU Guarantee Scholarship after a Financial Aid Award is created, the Financial Aid Award may change based on institutional, state, and federal guidelines regarding eligibility.
- Students will be reviewed for additional institutional, state, and federal aid based on FAFSA information.
- For traditional undergraduates, the scholarship is calculated as the difference between the Cost of Attendance (COA) at CLU for a full—time, residential student and the average COA for a full—time, residential student at UCLA, UCSB, UC Berkeley, and UC Davis. For ADEP students, the scholarship is calculated based on the Traditional Undergraduate cost per unit after the CLU Guarantee.
- The scholarship amount changes every year as the COA changes at these institutions. This means the amount can go up and it can go down. Should the CLU Guarantee Scholarship amount decrease in any year, continuing students will continue to receive the scholarship at the higher rate from a prior year.
- The scholarship is renewable for subsequent years at CLU provided the student maintains a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher and Satisfactory Academic Progress. Freshmen may receive the scholarship for up to a maximum of 4 years. Transfer students may receive the scholarship for up to a maximum of 2 years, depending on grade level at time of enrollment.
Calculating the CLU Guarantee Scholarship for Traditional Undergraduates:
The CLU Guarantee Scholarship amount is calculated using an average of the Cost of Attendance (COA) at the four UC institutions. This average is then subtracted from the COA at CLU, resulting in the scholarship amount.
COA includes tuition, fees, room, board, books, and other expenses a family might accrue while the student is at college such as transportation and personal expenses. It should not be confused with Direct Costs which are those costs paid directly to the institution, usually tuition, room, board, and fees.
For 2010—2011:
- The COA at the UC institutions for a full-time, residential student is:
- UC Berkeley: $30,972
- UC Santa Barbara: $30,284
- UC Los Angeles: $29,612
- UC Davis: $29,259
- The average COA at these 4 institutions is $30,032
- The COA at CLU is $46,192 making the CLU Guarantee Scholarship $16,160 ($46,192-$30,032) for incoming students.
- As this amount is less than the 2009-2010 amount of $16,918, continuing students will receive the 2009-2010 amount for the 2010-2011 academic year.
- The COA at the UC institutions for a full-time, residential student is:

Sample Student, John Smith:
John is a first—year student admitted to CLU and the recipient of an $11,000 Pederson Scholarship. He then receives his admission letter from UCLA. John copies his admission letter from UCLA, asks his counselor for a note with signature, and submits this documentation along with his $300 non—refundable enrollment deposit to the CLU Admission Office. The CLU Financial Aid Office replaces John’s Academic Scholarship with the CLU Guarantee Scholarship in the amount of $16,918.
Calculating the CLU Guarantee Scholarship for Adult Degree Evening Program (ADEP) Undergraduates:
Tuition for CLU’s Adult Degree Evening Program (ADEP) is more affordable than most UC institutions. ADEP students are guaranteed a quality, private education that is less expensive than many public universities. It’s like a CLU Guarantee Scholarship for every ADEP student!
Designed for busy adults, ADEP offers the convenience of an accelerated program with classes held just one or two nights per week. Now, with recent tuition increases at UC schools, ADEP’s tuition of $560 per credit is an even greater value.

Who is eligible for the CLU Guarantee Scholarship?
Incoming first-year and transfer students, including Adult Degree Evening Program (ADEP) students, who are admitted to CLU and UCLA, UCSB, UC Berkeley, or UC Davis who meet the eligibility requirements outlined on this website and submit all the required documentation to the CLU Admission Office.
Are re-admitted students eligible?
No. This program is for first-time, incoming first-year and transfer students only.
Are International Students eligible?
Yes, if the student meets the eligibility requirements.
I don’t live in California, can I qualify for this program?
Absolutely! If you are an incoming student and you are admitted to CLU and to UCLA, UCSB, UC Berkeley, or UC Davis, you can submit your paperwork and enrollment deposit and be eligible for this program. A student from Washington State is a current CLU Guarantee Scholarship recipient.
If I qualify for this scholarship, can I receive additional aid?
Yes! Provided the student files the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), he/she will be awarded any additional institutional, state, or federal aid for which he/she is eligible. If the student is in the ADEP program, he/she must also submit the ADEP Application for Financial Aid.
I received the ADEP Grant and am now eligible for the CLU Guarantee. Do I get both?
Yes! As long as you meet the eligibility requirements for the ADEP Grant, you can receive both it and the CLU Guarantee.
I received an Academic Scholarship to CLU and I am eligible for the CLU Guarantee. I get both right?
Unfortunately, no, you will not receive both the Academic Scholarship and the CLU Guarantee Scholarship. You will receive whichever scholarship amount is greater.
I received a Presidential Scholarship and am eligible for the CLU Guarantee. I get both right?
Students who receive a Presidential Scholarship and are eligible for the CLU Guarantee Scholarship will receive the greater of the two awards, but not both.
I was admitted to another UC institution, but not UCLA, UCSB, UC Berkeley, or UC Davis. Can I receive the Scholarship?
Unfortunately you do not meet the eligibility requirements for this particular scholarship. Please check our scholarships website for other opportunities.
Is this scholarship renewable?
Yes! Provided the student maintains a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher and maintains Satisfactory Academic Progress toward graduation. First-year students may receive the scholarship for up to a maximum of 4 years and transfer students may receive the scholarship for up to a maximum of 2 years, depending on grade level at time of enrollment to CLU.
When will the scholarship amount be available?
The amount for the upcoming academic year is usually available in the April prior to the start of the academic year. For 2010-2011, the scholarship amount for incoming traditional undergraduates is $16,160 and for continuing traditional undergraduates it is $16,918.
Tuition for CLU’s Adult Degree Evening Program (ADEP) is more affordable than most UC institutions. ADEP students are guaranteed a quality, private
education that is less expensive than many public universities.
Does the scholarship remain the same each year?
No! As the costs at CLU, UCLA, UCSB, UC Berkeley, and UC Davis change, so will the scholarship. Thus the scholarship amount for incoming students in one academic year could be higher or lower than the scholarship amount for incoming students in the previous year. The amount of the scholarship for continuing students will never decrease, but if there is a year when the scholarship amount decreases, continuing students will receive the same amount as the prior academic year.
For example, for traditional undergraduates, in 2009-2010, the CLU Guarantee Scholarship amount was $16,918. For 2010-2011, the CLU Guarantee Scholarship amount is $16,160. Students who are just starting at CLU in Fall 2010 who are eligible for the CLU Guarantee Scholarship will receive $16,160 for the academic year. Students who received the CLU Guarantee Scholarship at CLU in 2009-2010 and who are meeting the GPA and Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements will receive the scholarship in the amount of $16,918 for the 2010-2011 academic year. If the scholarship goes up to $17,000 in 2011-2012, then all students’ scholarship amounts, both incoming and continuing would go up to that level.
I’m a current CLU student, am I eligible?
All current students were evaluated for scholarships and financial aid based on the opportunities available to them during their application process to CLU.
I am a transfer student with less than 60 units and I haven't completed IGETC. Am I eligible?
To be eligible for the CLU Guarantee Scholarship you must have at least 60 transferable units or have completed IGETC plus have a 3.0 transferable GPA.
What happens if I don’t maintain a 3.0 GPA?
Your scholarship will be removed, but you will continue to receive all other institutional, state, and federal aid for which you are eligible.
What if I bring my GPA back up?
If you bring your cumulative GPA back to a 3.0 or higher, contact the Financial Aid Office and we will reinstate your scholarship.
What if I qualify for outside scholarships?
Outside scholarships are stacked on top of any other aid received from institutional, state, and federal resources, unless they amount to more than the Cost of Attendance (COA), in which case you may be required to forfeit part of the scholarship.
I wasn’t planning to live on campus at UCLA, UCSB, UC Berkeley, or UC Davis. Can you increase the scholarship amount to reflect that?
To make this scholarship program fair and consistent for all students, the scholarship will always be calculated as the difference between the Cost of Attendance (COA) at CLU for a full-time, residential student and the average of the COA for full-time, residential students at UCLA, UCSB, UC Berkeley, and UC Davis.
I don’t want to live on campus at CLU, can I still receive the scholarship?
Yes! If you are going to be commuting to CLU, you can still receive the scholarship. (Note: all Traditional Undergraduates at CLU are required to live on campus for their first three years, unless they live with their parents within 30 miles, are married, or are over the age of 23.)
I received a scholarship at UCLA, UCSB, UC Berkeley, or UC Davis, will my CLU Guarantee Scholarship be increased to match that?
No. The CLU Guarantee Scholarship is meant to make the cost of attending CLU approximately the same as the cost of attending UCLA, UCSB, UC Berkeley, or UC Davis, not including any scholarship money received at those institutions.
Why is CLU doing this?
CLU is offering this program for a number of reasons. First, we recognize that the increasing costs of college at both public and private institutions makes it difficult for many students to receive a high quality education. We want to ensure that as many students as possible have access to a high quality education. In addition, we want to encourage more students to look at all of the higher education options available to them. CLU recognizes the quality education that a student can receive at UCLA,UCSB, UC Berkeley, and UC Davis. However, we understand that some students are looking for smaller class sizes and personal attention from faculty, but do not think they can afford a private school. The purpose of the CLU Guarantee Scholarship is to help make a private school education more of a reality for many students. Finally, CLU firmly believes in the importance of providing opportunity and access to a private school education for ALL students.
