Private Education, Public Price
California Lutheran University is pleased to announce its newest scholarship program for incoming freshmen students: The CLU Guarantee Scholarship. This scholarship was established to provide an opportunity for eligible students to attend CLU for the cost of our neighbor University of California institutions, specifically the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). If a student is admitted to either UCLA or UCSB, CLU will match the cost of attendance!
The University of California is not affiliated with and does not endorse or support the CLU Guarantee Scholarship Program
Eligibility Requirements:
- Student must be an incoming Freshman
- Student must be admitted to CLU by April 15, 2009
- Student must be admitted to UCLA or UCSB
Once the student is admitted to UCLA or UCSB, he/she must submit the following to the CLU Office of Admission by May 1, 2009:
- Copy of admit letter to UCLA or UCSB
- Letter from high school counselor on school letterhead with signature affirming the student’s admission to UCLA or UCSB
- $300 non-refundable enrollment deposit confirming intent to enroll at CLU
Scholarship Information:
- The CLU Guarantee Scholarship replaces any Academic Scholarship the student was awarded.
- When receiving the CLU Guarantee Scholarship after a Financial Aid Award is created based on an Academic Scholarship, the Financial Aid Award may change due to institutional, state, and federal guidelines.
- Students will be reviewed for additional institutional, state, and federal aid based on FAFSA information.
- The scholarship is calculated as the difference between the Cost of Attendance (COA) at CLU for a full-time, residential student and the average COA for a full-time, residential student at UCLA and UCSB.
- The scholarship amount goes up every year that the COA goes up at these institutions.
- The scholarship is renewable for subsequent years at CLU provided the student maintains a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher and satisfactory academic progress.
Calculating the CLU Guarantee Scholarship:
- The 2008-2009 Cost of Attendance (COA) at UCLA for a full-time, residential student is $25,092 and the 2008-2009 COA at UCSB for a full-time, residential student is $26,453. Thus, the average COA of UCLA and UCSB is $25,773.
- The 2008-2009 COA at CLU is $39,355, making the CLU Guarantee Scholarship $15,994.
Sample Student, John Smith:
John is admitted to CLU before April 15, and receives a $10,000 Academic Scholarship. He then receives his admission letter from UCLA. John copies his admission letter, asks his counselor for a note with signature, and submits this documentation along with his $300 non-refundable enrollment deposit to the CLU Admission Office by May 1. The CLU Admission Office replaces John’s Academic Scholarship with the CLU Guarantee Scholarship in the amount of $15,994.

Incoming freshmen students who are admitted to CLU and UCLA or UCSB who submit all the required documentation to the CLU Admission Office by May 1, 2009.
No. This program is for freshman only, but there are scholarships available for transfer students.
Yes, if the student meets the other eligibility requirements.
Yes! Provided the student files the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), he/she will be awarded any additional institutional, state, or federal aid he/she is eligible.
- I received an Academic Scholarship to CLU and I am eligible for the CLU Guarantee. I get both right?
Unfortunately, no, you will not receive both the Academic Scholarship and the CLU Guarantee Scholarship. You will receive whichever scholarship amount is greater.
Students who receive a Presidential Scholarship and are eligible for the CLU Guarantee Scholarship will receive the greater of the two awards, but not both.
Yes! Provided the student maintains a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher and maintains satisfactory academic progress toward graduation.
The 2008 - 2009 scholarship amount is $15,994. The 2009 - 2010 scholarship amount will be available mid to late April, 2009.
No! As the costs at CLU, UCLA, and UCSB rise, so will the scholarship amount. Thus, the scholarship in 2009-2010 could be more than the 2008-2009 scholarship, depending on the cost increases at the institutions.
All current students were evaluated for scholarships and financial aid based on the opportunities available to them during their application process to CLU.
Your scholarship will be removed, but you will continue to receive all other institutional, state, and federal aid for which you are eligible.
If you bring your cumulative GPA back to a 3.0 or higher, contact the Financial Aid Office and we will reinstate your scholarship.
Outside scholarships are stacked on top of any other aid received from institutional, state, and federal resources, unless they amount to more than Cost of Attendance (COA), in which case you may be required to forfeit part of the scholarship.
Absolutely! If you are an incoming freshman and you are admitted to CLU and to UCLA or UCSB, you can submit your paperwork and enrollment deposit and be eligible for this program.
- I wasn’t planning to live on campus at UCLA or UCSB, can you increase the scholarship amount to reflect that?
To make this scholarship program fair and consistent for all students, the scholarship will always be calculated as the difference between the Cost of Attendance (COA) at CLU for a full-time, residential student and the average of the COA for full-time, residential students at UCLA and UCSB.
Yes! If you are going to be commuting to CLU, you can still receive the scholarship. (Note: all students at CLU are required to live on campus for their first three years, unless they live with their parents within 30 miles, are married, or are over the age of 23.)
- I received a scholarship at UCLA or UCSB, will my CLU Guarantee Scholarship be increased to match that?
No. The CLU Guarantee Scholarship is meant to make the cost of attending CLU approximately the same as the cost of attending UCLA or UCSB, not including any scholarship money received at those institutions.
- I was waitlisted at UCLA or UCSB, just found out I was admitted, and it is after May 1. Am I eligible?
Unfortunately, you must be admitted and have all of your paperwork and tuition deposit submitted to CLU by May 1, 2009, to be eligible for this program.
CLU is offering this program for a number of reasons. First, we recognize that the increasing costs of college at both public and private institutions makes it difficult for many students to receive a high quality education. We want to ensure that as many students as possible have access to a high quality education. In addition, we want to encourage more students to look at all of the higher education options available to them. CLU recognizes the quality education that a student can receive at UCLA and UCSB. However, we understand that some students are looking for smaller class sizes and personal attention from faculty, but do not think they can afford a private school. The CLU Guarantee Scholarship is to help make a private school education more of a reality for many students. Finally, CLU firmly believes in the importance of providing opportunity and access to a private school education for ALL students.
