Welcome!

Below are links to photographs of cultivated plants commonly found in gardens and landscaping in southern California. These plants are indexed according to scientific, common, and family names. The plants were organized and identified by Barbara J. Collins. The photographs were taken by both Barbara and Lorence G. Collins. Although some plants have many common names, we have listed only one or two. Also, many plants have multiple varieties or 'cultivars' (sometimes over a thousand), and we have included only a few. Under Plant Category, trees have been separated from shrubs, but some plants in the shrub section could become trees, so the viewer should keep this in mind. Most of the photos were taken from identified plants at nurseries and botanical gardens, but some from landscaped homes and city streets.

Plans for More

This website now contains photos of plants taken in a complete year's cycle and includes more than 5,500 images. Later plans include adding a color key and information for best growing conditions and locations. We will continue to add photographs to this website. Feel free to give us suggestions as we work on this project. Contact us at: bcollins@callutheran.edu.

Acknowledgments

We gratefully acknowledge the work of our son, Kevin Collins, who designed and authored the website and search engine. This project has been a labor of love for the three of us. We also gratefully acknowledge the Hewlett Foundation for providing us with small grants to help defray the costs of film development and travel and California Lutheran University for hosting this website. In addition, we want to acknowledge the many nurseries and gardens in the vicinity, whose plants for sale or display we have photographed.
