Intimate Partner Violence: Contemporary Theory and Clinical Interventions

The City of Westlake Village and California Lutheran University’s Graduate School of Psychology are pleased to sponsor this CE workshop to advance clinician skills and facilitate networking among mental health professionals treating domestic violence in Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara counties. We welcome the attendance of clinicians and graduate students in MFT, counseling psychology, clinical psychology, social work, and related fields.

Clinicians seek to advance their skills in understanding and assisting victims of intimate partner violence. This Saturday workshop will examine contemporary theory and clinical work related to domestic violence, including:

  • contemporary psychodynamic theory and attachment theory as a framework for understanding IPV treatment
  • understanding the continuum of anger and abuse
  • interactive case discussions and video excerpts
  • assessment and intervention

Educational Goals and Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Articulate the relationship between attachment theory and how violent relationships are sustained
  2. Explain several parallels between the behaviors of victims and the behaviors of addicts
  3. Discuss research findings related to intimate partner violence
  4. Describe the differences between anger and abuse and different kinds of abuse
  5. Understand how to intervene with this population Clinicians seek to advance their skills in understanding and assisting victims of intimate partner violence.

Speakers

Morris EagleMorris Eagle, PhD, ABPP is the former president of the Division of Psychoanalysis, American Psychological Association, the author of over 150 journal articles and books, a consultant, researcher, and educator. Notably, Dr. Eagle received the Sigourney Award for Lifetime Contributions in Psychoanalysis, the Otto Weininger Memorial Award for Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Achievement, and holds a Diplomate in Psychoanalysis from the American Board of Professional Examiners in Psychology. He is currently the Distinguished Educator in Residence at California Lutheran University where he teaches and advises doctoral students in clinical psychology. He is also faculty and member at the NYU Postgraduate Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, NYU Medical Center Psychoanalytic Institute, Toronto Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis, and New Center for Psychoanalysis (NCP).

Alyce LaVioletteAlyce LaViolette, MFT speaks nationally and internationally on the topic of domestic violence. She is a clinician, writer, and speaker; and has served as a consultant on domestic violence with the US Department of State. She has worked with battered women since 1978, first as an advocate at WomenShelter of Long Beach and then in private practice. In 1979, she founded Alternatives to Violence in Long Beach, one of the first programs in the country for spouse abusers. She is the co-author of one of Sage Publication's best-selling books, "It Could Happen to Anyone: Why Battered Women Stay," currently in its second edition. Alyce has received numerous awards for her work, including the Humanitarian Award from Peace Over Violence and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Statewide California Coalition on Battered Women.

Continuing Education

California Lutheran University (CLU) is approved by the California Psychological Association (CPA) to provide continuing professional education for psychologists (CPA OPD Provider GRA03). The California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) now recognizes CPA continuing education credit for license renewal for LCSWs and MFTs. Also, the BBS recognizes CLU (a WASC accredited institution) CE offerings for LMFT, LPCC, and LCSW license renewal. This program will provide attendees with 6 CE credits for full attendance; no partial credit will be awarded. CLU maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
