Basic Function
Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and secondary supervision of the Laboratory Coordinator, the Laboratory Technician provides laboratory support and assists instructors for the biology and chemistry programs in the set-up, organization, and maintenance of the science laboratories. The position is responsible for supporting instruction, ensuring safety, and maintaining operations of science laboratories.
Representative Duties
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Laboratory Technician provides technical laboratory support and assists instructors. The Laboratory Coordinator provides lead and technical work in coordinating and performing essential laboratory requirements; the Laboratory Coordinator is responsible for inventory control, ordering supplies and equipment, updating and maintaining records, and delegating and overseeing the work of Laboratory Technicians and student workers.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
• Sets-up equipment for experiments for laboratory and classroom demonstrations. E
• Prepares reagents and chemical and noxious gas solutions for classroom use. E
• Provides technical assistance and serves as a laboratory liaison for faculty contacts; provides training in laboratory procedures as needed. E
• Assists with the collection and disposal of chemical and other hazardous waste. E
• Assists with the ordering, receiving, storing and inventory of laboratory chemicals, supplies and equipment. E
• Consults with faculty on specific needs of each experiment. E
• Exercises special care and handling in the cleaning and storage of laboratory equipment and glassware. E
• Demonstrates proper use and care of laboratory materials, equipment, chemicals, and supplies to students and faculty. E
• Coordinates with appropriate personnel regarding the set-up and maintenance of science labs. E
• Maintains cleanliness of teaching laboratories and chemical stockroom to ensure that it is in clean, safe and orderly condition. E
• Ensures compliance with federal and state laws and regulations concerning laboratory, chemical and biohazard safety. E
• Operates a variety of laboratory equipment. E
• Maintains records, databases, and safety data sheets. E
• Participates in and attends a variety of relevant campus events as needed.
• Performs other related duties as requested or assigned.
Knowledge Of
• Principles, methods, and procedures used in general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry laboratories.
• Chemical reagents and solutions.
• Basic maintenance, calibration, and repair of laboratory equipment.
• Safety procedures in the laboratory.
• Special care and handling of laboratory equipment.
• Methods and procedures used in thorough cleaning and sterilizing of laboratory equipment.
• Laboratory techniques and methods, including preparation of simple media, reagents and other solutions.
• Word processing, spreadsheet, and database computer software programs.
• Basic record keeping techniques.
Ability To
• Follow complex instructions in the preparation and construction of media and equipment set-ups.
• Prepare chemical and reagent solutions, extracts, and dilutions to specifications.
• Stay abreast of technical subjects, practices, and developments in the field of chemistry.
• Maintain an inventory of equipment and tools.
• Work effectively and cooperatively with students and instructional staff.
• Give clear and concise instructions.
• Oversee and delegate work to student workers.
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Explain/demonstrate laboratory equipment, chemicals, materials and supplies.
• Dispose of chemical waste safely and properly in accordance to established policies and procedures.
• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and materials in a clean, safe and orderly manner.
• Meet schedules and timelines.
• Work on multiple projects simultaneously.
• Prioritize and schedule work.
• Maintain records and databases.
Education and Experience
MINIMUM QUALFICIATIONS:
Any combination equivalent to: Bachelor's Degree with a major in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, or related field and some relevant experience working in a chemistry, biology, or biochemistry laboratory.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
At least one year of relevant experience working in a chemistry, biology, or biochemistry laboratory.

LICENSES/OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
None.
Environment
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Laboratory environment; constant interruptions; exposure to chemicals and hazardous materials.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Lift equipment or boxes up to 25 lbs.; bending for storing items; ability to climb ladder for storing items; manual dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard; standing and walking for extended periods of time; speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
