Basic FunctionUnder the direction of the Director of Upward Bound Program, the Upward Bound Instructor is responsible for planning, teaching and evaluating assigned classes in accordance with Upward Bound rules, policies and procedures; maintaining student class records; fulfilling committee and administrative duties as required and/or requested; and participating in student development activities.
Representative DutiesDISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Instructor I, Upward Bound classification is the first-level classification in the series and is responsible for high school-level college preparatory high school credit instruction with varying complexity. The Instructor II is responsible for college-level credit instruction with advanced level complexity.
• Provides academic instruction to students for the purpose of improving their success in academics through a defined course of study. E
• Develops a thorough understanding of the project's overall goals and provides assistance in planning, developing and implementing content-area curriculum according to established curriculum guidelines and federal requirements. E
• Prepares assignments, tests, and homework and monitors, assists, corrects, and grades student results. E
• Prepares and submits course syllabus, course objectives, and integrated lesson plans before classes begin; distributes syllabus and objectives to students. E
• Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy educational environment; implements, complies and enforces standards and procedures. E
• Assesses and develops students' cognitive abilities, communication skills, and higher order thinking skills; develops curriculum to address student needs; tailors instruction to various student skill levels. E
• Implements innovative and diverse teaching methods; develops and presents lesson plans by using a variety of techniques, including lectures, projects, exhibits, field trips, audiovisual and library resources, computers, and the internet. E
• Maintains records of academic performance, attendance, and other relevant records/documentation; reports on all elements of student development at staff-teacher meetings, both regularly scheduled and as-needed; keeps staff apprised. E
• Participates in workshops and weekly meetings related to students’ personal and academic development, and contributes to student plans of action; participates in individual and group staff, student, and all-program meetings. E
• Assesses, identifies and prescribes areas of needed remediation for participants; counsels students for the purpose of improving performance; collaborates with other staff and personnel and/or refers participants to appropriate resources for additional assistance. E
• Identifies and assists in providing resources needed to implement curriculum. E
• Prepares written reports and evaluations on student progress. E
• Reports incidents for the purpose of maintaining the safety of students and adhering to applicable rules, policies and regulations; responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution. E
• Manages student behavior and monitors students in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom, school grounds, hallways, restrooms, field trips, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment. E
• Provides tutorial assistance to students. E
• Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information and/or direction. E
• Organizes additional study and project sessions as needed.
• Participates in Upward Bound's extracurricular activities as directed.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

Education and ExperienceMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination equivalent to: bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and possession of teaching credential in one of the following core curriculum areas: English, foreign language, mathematics, laboratory science, or social science.
• Master’s or Ph.D. with a minimum of three years of teaching experience is preferred.
• Previous TRIO (e.g. Upward Bound) Program experience.
• Experience working with economically challenged and diverse student populations.
Appropriate California Teaching Credential
Indoor and outdoor environment; seated for extended periods of time; subject to visiting a variety of maintenance work sites on campus.
Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office equipment; speaking to exchange information, provide instruction and make presentations; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; pushing, pulling or lifting light objects; bending and reaching to store and/or retrieve files.
