This Issue’s Techno Term:
Term:
  Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS)
Definition:  A system for transmitting and receiving information across the Internet. An "S" added to the HTTP prefix in a Web address indicates the site is equipped with an additional security layer. Such sites typically request that "visitors" provide a password or other means of authentication to access the site. HTTPS is often used for sites that accept payments online or when accessing classified information.
Example in a sentence:  When asked to provide personal information online, such as a credit card number, always look for https in the URL before submitting information. If this protocol is not there, the site is not secure--and neither is the information submitted.
