Print + Art Exhibition

PRINT+: Sameness and Otherness in Contemporary Printmedia October 6, 2023 – February 1, 2024 Open for Homecoming 2023  |  Saturday October 7, 12 – 7 PM Print+ focuses on the importance of showcasing artwork where diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion create an essential and fertile ecology. In this gathering, artists coming from diverse backgrounds and multiple intersectionalities present works of protest and resistance using one or more printing elements; the inks, the matrixes, the paper, the equipment, or the print. The resulting artwork can range from two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects to time-based videos and performances; from hospital gowns to quilts, from handkerchiefs to cotton; from folded paper to photographs. Each work tells a unique story as varied as the lives of the participating artists. Curated by Sheila Goloborotko, Print + initially showcased at the Hunterdon Art Museum in Clinton, NJ. It subsequently journeyed to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Jacksonville, FL, where Goloborotko serves as an Associate Professor in Printmaking at the University of North Florida. California Lutheran University will be the concluding venue for this traveling exhibition. It is hosted in both the William Rolland Gallery of Fine Art and the Kwan Fong Gallery.

Echoes of History | Janet Neuwalder

Contemporary Fossils Responding to the Japanese Internment in the United States and Holocaust Displacement EXHIBITION | AUGUST 14–SEPTEMBER 20, 2023 WORKSHOP | SEPTEMBER 7, 2023, 4:00–5:30 p.m. RECEPTION | SEPTEMBER 7, 2023, 5:30–7:00 p.m. CHAPEL SERVICE | SEPTEMBER 14, 2023, 11:20–12:00 p.m. Janet Neuwalder, a Senior Adjunct Faculty in the Art Department, presents a collection of memorial-like installations that leave an imprint upon the viewer’s consciousness. Through her masterful manipulation of clay, Neuwalder sculpts interconnected blossoms of shells, evocative topographic cityscapes, delicate porcelain shoes (to name a few), employing remnants of the craft and materials borrowed from the realm of archaeology. She unearths the enduring strength within fragility, delicately constructing forms and ideas that withstand the tests of time. This body of work emanates from a profound personal connection to the subject matter, serving as a poignant tribute to the intricate tapestry woven by Neuwalder’s own family experiences. Reflecting on her mother’s internment in the Japanese-American camp Topaz, in the harsh Utah desert, and her father’s harrowing history of Holocaust displacement, Neuwalder deftly intertwines the threads of history with the resilient essence of the human spirit.

Recuerdos | Exhibit by John Galan

ON VIEW  |  February 20 – March 31, 2023 Recuerdos, or memories, is an invitation to look back at one’s life journey and reflect on the struggles & triumphs of the human experience. Galan’s artwork dives into the subconscious, pulling at the many layers of what makes us human. He creates art that represents the contemporary Chicanx diaspora and draws from his own experiences growing up Mexican-American confronting generational stigmas. John Galan is an emerging artist, educator, and internationally exhibited artist residing in Conejo Valley. He is also an alum of California Lutheran University, and his work emphasizes the inseparable relationship between humankind and the natural world. In his ongoing series, Galan portrays memories through cultural traditions rooted in indigenous ritualism and healing practices. The pieces illustrate the body’s connection to mental health and its ability to heal through natural remedies passed down by the artist’s ancestors. Galan combines universal archetypes of the lungs, brain, and heart with symbolic imagery from contemporary Chicanx culture and cuisine. This work is a reframing of Neo-Chicano art, and by creating this exchange between what is current and the past, he aims to challenge multi-cultural traditions and promote healing of the mind, body, and ...
