Self Image

by Terry Spehar Fahey

Terry Spehar-Fahey invites you to share a selection of images from her journey out of depression and its pain to the joy of self-esteem. These images were created during and after eight months of psychotherapy. By using art to "paint her feelings" in addition to weekly meetings with her therapist, Spehar-Fahey created more than 70 images within the first five months. Through art, she was able to get in touch with, release and express repressed emotions; enliven the therapeutic relationship; and bring forth profound discoveries of unconscious, intuitive knowledge of the family system and developmental psychological issues. Interestingly for the artist, these images also had a connection to the "St. Theresa of Los Angeles" series begun long ago in college but not finished until now with the help of therapy. For Spehar-Fahey, this show represents an understanding of nascent self-expression and the permission she now grants herself to paint whatever arises emotionally.
