Our Middle Name

How does our identity as a Lutheran university affect the student experience both inside and outside the classroom? What is unique about this kind of learning community?

Lutheran is not only our middle name, but also an important part of who we are as an academic and social community.

What does this mean at Cal Lutheran?

The compass statement is an articulation for today of the Lutheran commitments that inspired the university’s founders and which continue to undergird our mission and purpose as a university of the church.

  • Created to honor God and benefit the world, California Lutheran University reflects our Lutheran identity by our trust in God's grace, a commitment to academic excellence and freedom, and an ethic of service to neighbor.
  • We respond to God's goodness shown in Creation by caring for the earth and engaging the whole world in its diversity.
  • We live out God's love shown in Christ by commitment to justice and peace and belief in the dignity of every individual.
  • We trust in God's enlightening Spirit by advancing human knowledge and seeking insight and wisdom through inquiry and study.

We should fear, love, and trust in God above all things...
