(THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Sept. 4, 2014) California Lutheran University is offering French and Spanish tours of its art exhibit celebrating America’s beauty.

Native speakers will guide visitors on free tours of “The Beautiful: Contemporary Images of America” exhibition in William Rolland Gallery of Art and Culture on Friday, Sept. 26. Spanish tours will start at 8 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. French tours will begin at 10:30 a.m., 11:45 a.m. and 1 p.m. The tours will be appropriate for those learning the languages.

Cal Lutheran is also extending the exhibit’s run through Oct. 2. It had originally been scheduled to close on Sept. 11.

Referencing the patriotic song “America the Beautiful” in its title, the exhibit offers glimpses of subjects both ordinary and monumental, from dramatic landscapes and “amber waves of grain” to cityscapes and the everyday pleasures people allow themselves. The mix of Americana reflects the country’s diversity, including many ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Los Angeles artists included in the exhibit are photographer Catherine Opie, painter, photographer and sculptor Nicolas Shake, and painters Sonya Fe, Roni Feldman, Christopher Ulrich and Christine Wu. Also featured are installation artist Chris Christion and collage artist, photographer, painter Jessica Wimbley of Claremont, landscape photographers Terry Evans of Chicago and Frank Gohlke of Arizona, photographer Scott McFarland of Toronto, and painters Amanda Joseph of Ohio, Sandra Mendelsohn Rubin of Boonville and Seth Tane of Oregon.

Art is on loan from Gallery Luisotti, Garboushian Gallery, LA Louver, La Luz de Jesus Gallery, Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Regen Projects, Western Project and Zg Gallery.

Rachel T. Schmid is the curator. University Advancement and the Ann Peppers Foundation Arts Education Series are sponsoring the exhibit.

The gallery is located in William Rolland Stadium at 160 Overton Court on the Thousand Oaks campus. It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
