CLU extends cost-matching program

Transfers can get private education at public price

November 13, 2008

(THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Nov. 13, 2008) California Lutheran University is expanding its program that provides a private school education at a public school price to include transfer students in the 2009-2010 year.

The CLU Guarantee Scholarship: Private Education, Public Price allows incoming students who are also admitted to either University of California, Los Angeles or University of California, Santa Barbara to attend CLU for the cost of attending the public university.

Transfer students must have a 3.0 transferrable grade point average and have either completed 60 transferrable units or the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum.

The university is also continuing the CLU Guarantee Scholarship for incoming freshmen, a program that started with 2008-2009 admissions. Currently 20 freshmen, including 11 first-generation college students, are receiving the scholarship.

With the current financial crisis, this program will provide more students with the opportunity to enjoy the high-quality education, small class sizes and experience of working closely with faculty that a small private university like CLU offers. The average adjusted gross income of the current recipients’ families is $58,716.

The savings on tuition, books and living expenses for freshmen and transfer students will amount to about $16,000 a year. If students maintain a 3.0 grade point average and make satisfactory academic progress, they can renew the scholarship each year. The scholarship amount will increase every year that the cost of attendance goes up.

The scholarship amount for the 2008-2009 year is $15,994. This is the difference in the cost for full-time residential students attending CLU, which is $41,767, and the average cost of attending UCLA or UCSB, which is $25,773. The 2009-2010 scholarship amount will be announced in spring after the universities have updated their costs.

The CLU Guarantee Scholarship has no income or residency requirements. Students can also receive institutional, state and federal aid based on need to further reduce their cost.
