(THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – March 21, 2013) The California Lutheran University Community Leaders Association presented its service award Wednesday to a dedicated campus and community volunteer.

Sue Bauer of Westlake Village received the William E. Hamm Outstanding Service Award, which is given to CLA members who have shown exemplary service, at the Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce Networking at Night Mixer and Business Expo on campus.

Bauer has served several terms on the CLA Board of Directors and has lent a hand for many of the organization’s events including the annual Golf Tournament, Hats and High Tea and Mathews Leadership Forum. She and her husband, Bernie, joined the group in 1995. Bauer, who focused on adult learning and instructional delivery while earning her doctorate in education from Pepperdine University, retired as the director of client services at CLU in May after 12 years at the university. She also taught education classes and founded the CLU Expressionists, the campus chapter of Toastmasters International.

Bauer also volunteers in the community. She contributes her time weekly as a certified crime and intelligence analyst for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. She was recently appointed to the board of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Ventura County, an organization that recruits, screens and trains community volunteers to act as a voice for foster children.

The Hamm Award is named in honor of a former CLU vice president who contributed to the development of the university and the betterment of the Conejo Valley community. Established in 1985, it honors individuals who have provided exceptional service to CLA, CLU and the community.

CLA was founded in 1963 to stimulate the community's interest in CLU's academic, athletic and cultural programs. Members organize fundraising and social events throughout the year to support academic programs and scholarships. The organization has provided more than $1.8 million through the years.
