NORMAN, Okla. -- With a season that included four top ten’s, an individual title at the Master’s Invitational and a second straight trip to the NCAA DIII Golf Championships, Cal Lutheran golfer Mikey McGinn was honored for his outstanding 2012-13 season by being named a Second Team All-American announced by PING and the Golf Coaches Association of America Monday. McGinn becomes just the second Kingsmen to earn the national honor joining Alan Johnson who was also named to the Second Team in 2005.
Serving as CLU’s No. 1 golfer throughout the season, McGinn led the Kingsmen to team titles at the Master’s Invitational and the Texas Lutheran University Concan Invitational. The junior also led the Kingsmen in stroke average with a 73.5. His individual title at the Master’s Invitational came in dramatic fashion as McGinn sank an eight-foot birdie putt during the first playoff hole and sealed the championship.
McGinn also guided CLU to a fourth place team finish at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic (SCIAC) Championships and earned First-Team All-SCIAC honors as individual, shooting 68 (4-under par) during the final round to put him in a tie for fourth.
The Kingsmen also made a return trip to the NCAA Tournament where they finished 25th as team. McGinn was the top overall individual finisher for CLU, shooting 80-73 to finish 64th in the 210-player field.
Joining McGinn on the Second Team was fellow SCIAC golfer Bobby Holden of Redlands. Brad Shigezawa of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps earned First Team All-America honors after winning the DIII Individual National Title. John McCord and Derek Zachman rounded out the SCIAC golfers as each earned Third Team honors.
