Talks explore 'God's Knowledge and Ours'
Recent Guggenheim fellow will give two free lectures
Linda Zagzebski will discuss the difficult philosophical and theological puzzles posed by questions of how can God know us and how can we know God.
(THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Jan. 29, 2014) A professor of philosophy, religion and ethics will discuss God’s knowledge of us and our knowledge of God in a pair of free lectures at California Lutheran University on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
Linda Zagzebski will explore “God’s Knowledge and Ours” during the 27th Harold Stoner Lectures in Samuelson Chapel. She will present “Omnisubjectivity: The Subjectivity of God” at 11:10 a.m. and “Knowing God: A Defense of Religious Authority” at 4 p.m.
Zagzebski will discuss the difficult philosophical and theological puzzles posed by questions of how can God know us and how can we know God. The gap between creatures and God makes it hard for us to see how there can be any deep, serious knowledge in either direction. The lectures will explore divine knowledge of creatures and human knowledge of God.
The University of Oklahoma faculty member is past president of the Society of Christian Philosophers and the American Catholic Philosophical Association. In 2012-13, she held a Guggenheim Fellowship to complete her book “Epistemic Authority: A Theory of Trust, Authority, and Autonomy in Belief.” Her earlier books include “The Dilemma of Freedom and Foreknowledge,” “Divine Motivation Theory,” “Philosophy of Religion: An Historical Introduction” and “On Epistemology.” She has also edited many books and articles.
Her recent endowed lectures include the Aquinas Lecture at Marquette University in 2013, the Wilde Lectures in Natural Religion at Oxford in 2010 and the Kaminski Lectures at the Catholic University of Lublin, Poland, in 2011.
