Cardenas, Handley Named All-Academic

PASADENA, Calif. – Closing out its strong spring both athletically and in the classroom, Cal Lutheran pushed its total up to 32 student-athletes honored as Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) All-Academic when Moises Cardenas and Sean Handley were selected to the Tennis Team last Thursday.

In order to be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.40 cumulative grade point average at his or her current institution, must have completed one full calendar year at that institution and must have reached sophomore athletic eligibility.

In his first year competing for the Kingsmen, Cardenas served as the team’s No. 1 singles player and later advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Championships en route to earning All-America honors. The junior from Van Nuys, Calif. finished the season 18-5 including 6-1 during SCIAC play. Off the court, Cardenas is majoring in Psychology.

Handley earns All-Academic honors in his second year on the team. The sophomore from Santa Barbara, Calif. finished the season 5-14 (4-3 against SCIAC opponents) as CLU’s No. 4 singles player. In the classroom, Handley is majoring in Computer Science and minoring in Art.

In total, 17 men’s tennis players were selected to the All-Academic team with Occidental leading the way with five selections.
