Holly Kearl of AAUW will discuss what sexual harassment looks like, what your rights are, and how to bring attention to the problem.

(THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., Sept. 5, 2012) – AAUW’s Holly Kearl will speak at California Lutheran University on Monday, Sept. 24. She will discuss “Addressing Sexual Harassment on Campus” at 7 p.m. in Overton Hall.

More than 60 percent of college students experience sexual harassment on campus, but many are unsure what to do about it when it happens. Kearl, a national street harassment expert, writer and women’s nonprofit professional based in the Washington, D.C., area, will discuss what sexual harassment looks like, what your rights are, and how to bring attention to the problem.

Kearl is the author of “Stop Street Harassment: Making Public Places Safe and Welcoming for Women.” Since the book was published in 2010, she has given more than 50 talks around the world about this issue and has received widespread media attention for her comprehensive work to end street harassment.

She has worked full time for AAUW since 2007, managing programs that address issues like sexual harassment and assault and workplace discrimination. She co-authored a 2011 AAUW national report on sexual harassment in grades 7 through 12 titled “Crossing the Line: Sexual Harassment at School.”

In 2008, Kearl founded Stop Street Harassment, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending gender-based street harassment worldwide. In spring 2011, she founded international Anti-Street Harassment Day, which a year later became International Anti-Street Harassment Week.

The United Nations, USA Today, BBC News, the New York Times, CNN, the Washington Post and National Public Radio have cited Kearl’s work.

Overton Hall is located near the Soiland Humanities Center on Memorial Parkway in Thousand Oaks.

CLU’s Gender and Women’s Studies Program and Center for Equality and Justice and the Thousand Oaks branch of AAUW are sponsoring the free event. For more information, contact Akiko Yasuike at 805-493-3565 or ayasuike@callutheran.edu.
